X-RAY REVIEW PROGRAM FOR POSSIBLE ASBESTOSIS
The following information is being provided as requested in Dr. Bruce W. Karrh's letter, dated October 27, 1980.
The Beaumont Works identified 252 active employees and 25 pensioners for parti cipation in Asbestos Related Lung Abnormality Study. This*group was selected using the following criteria:
Possible asbestos exposure Over 40 years of age
10 years or more service at Beaumont Works
The first phase of the program was for a Board Certified Radiologist to review all of the X-rays in each employee's medical file for indications of asbestos related abnormalities. This work has been completed for all active employees and is currently in progress for the pensioners.
The radiologist's findings indicate that 242 active employees do not show abnormalities associated with asbestos. Che employee (included in the 252) was reviewed prior to this study and was diagnosed as having possible asbes-
.tosis by Dr. Daniel E. Jenkins, Chief, Environmental Medicine Section, Baylor
College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. During the present program 9 more employees were determined by the radiologist to have X-ray abnormalities which could be related to asbestos exposure. Arrangements have been made for a complete pulmonary evaluation of these employees by Dr. Jenkins during May, 1981. In addition, another employee's X-rays, reviewed during a routine annual exam, indicated a possibility of asbestosis. He is also scheduled to see Dr. Jenkins in May. Reports on the result of these special studies will be communicated to you as soon as they are available.
The review program for pensioners should be completed by mid-April, and we will advise you of the results at that time.
