What Ls sizing and what does it, do for you?
In its simplest terms, sizing' is a protective chem
ical coating Hint- is put. on rayon and other yarns. The
coaling helps the yarn go safely through modem high
speed looms with a minimum number of defects or
imperfections in the fabric. Flexibility, abrasion re-
sistanee and strength are all necessary mpiirenients
for this protective ske coaling.
After the size has done its job in the transforma
tion of yarn to fabric, it must also be easy to remove in
preparation for dyeing. Complete removal is essential
to uniform dyeing.
It. is a relatively simple but vital operation hi
textile manufacl tire. Sizing, as one mill superintendent
explained It, "Is responsible for the marriage of quan
tity production and quality fabric." This marriage is
essential to bring you fabrics at today's low cost.
In the manufacture of rayon dress fabrics, such
as crepes and taffetas, sizing plays an important, role.
First, it tends to bind together the numerous fine
filaments in each thread of rayon yarn. 11. also affords
the protection needed. Without siting, excessive break
ing of these fine yarns would take place. Result? An increased rate of "seconds" or imperfections and a
decreased rate of production--both expensive items.
Rayon dress fabrics are woven from yams which
have been sized by aslashersueh as the one illustrated

Du Pont, we hasten to add, does not make any mops, but does supply the sponge yam to mop manu facturers, though not exclusively so. You may recall that recently in this Magazine we described and illus trated a car-washing mitt faced with this yarn. Some other practical uses for it are still in the experimental or development stages, and doubtless more will be, ......Nobody.. ...knows, how far.this.better... product ...can... go in the industrial fabrication field.
