Monomer Recovery System Project No. 70-001
Memo to H.B. Carr from F.W. Kanzler Dated November 13, 1969

As outlined in the referenced memo, p-Dimethoxybenzene levels were monitored in the recovery system of the Copolymer Plant.
Since an analysis of the Hold Tank is representative of the recovered monomer charged, no analyses of the Vinyl Acetate Sump were made after the initial analysis of the Sump on November 11, 1969. The values found for the Sump were 20 ppm p-Dimethoxybenzene, phenol not detected. The relative high levels of p-Dimethoxybenzene in December (see graph attached) are suspected to be attributable to the reduced charge of recovered monomer during special charges in the Co polymer Plant, resulting in a build-up of the inhibitor level. Production found indications of a reduction in the polymer build-up. This is based on the reduced frequency of the Cuno filter changes. A conclusive evaluation can only be made at the time of the Inspection of the Hold Tank. An Inspection of the Hold Tank is scheduled for March, 1970. The inspec tion will show if a decrease of the polymer build-up is effected by the inhibitor addition, since the timing for the tank inspection is normal. No change of kinetics has been noted in the Copolymer Plant since the start of the inhib itor addition. A revised method for analysis of peroxides in recovered monomer is in the development stage.
The attached graph shows the levels of p-Dimethoxybenzene and phenol In the Copolymer Recovery Hold Tank. The graph will be Incorporated in the In-Process Testing Report.

Bound Acetate Analysis by Infra Red Spectophotometer
. Date December 19, 1969
copy to H.B. Carr C.W. Johnston M.W. Williams
As we had discussed previously, Mike, the bound acetate analyses do not correlate as anticipated between the A&E laboratory and the Burlington Analytical Control labor atory. The latest results (Request No. 1824) are a case in point. The two samples run were of the 385 type co polymer resin with a specification range of -13.5-15.3$ bound acetate. The expected acetate level as per charged
vinyl acetate monomer would be 14.5-15.5$. These numbers are based on past conversion data. The reported Fleming ton and Burlington results compare as follows:
Lot Number
659080 659081
Flemington
Burlington
% Bound Acetate
17.0 15.8
14.8 14.6
On the basis of the results, would you please rerun the samples in question. At the same time a review of the handling practice by the technician might be in order.
