VOLUME XVII JUXE-JULY, 1915 NUMBER 5 "The Good Old Days"--And The New N our Company, as in many others that have made unusual records, Ithere is a natural tendency to look back over and talk over the "good old days," and I see no harm in it as long as we do not dwell too long in our reflections or rest content with our past achievements. The "good old days" have gone, and they have been pleasant, success ful and inspiring. But splendid as they have been, I am convinced that still better and bigger days are in store for us in this Company. The young men, so many of whom I am glad to see around us, are coming into their own, and bid fair to outstrip the very best we "oldtimers" have ever done. My expectations and hopes for the future of our Company rest on the young managers and their young assistants, whom they are so care fully training. My faith in them grows strong as I note the tireless energy and the increasing ability with which they apply themselves to the development of their tasks. Every department of our business is going ahead with a new impetus, which is the result of the splendid energy and enthusiasm of these young men. Youth and physical fitness coupled with energy, ability and ambition are the things that make it possible to snatch records from opportunity. Many fine old records of the "old days" have been broken in all departments of our business during the past few months, and I am writing this message to congratulate our young men who are so largely respon sible for these splendid results, and to say how proud I am of them. I am sure the new period of expansion I spoke of at our last Conven tion is at hand. I feel confident you wall make the most of it, and that the future of our Company is safe in your hands. I hope you realize as I do, the immense opportunities this business offers you for a highly successful career. The Company with its ample financial resources, '* its unequalled facilities and its highly developed organization, is behind you, and with our aims as high as ever and our ambitions still unsatisfied there is no other limit than your own ability and capacity for achievement. 20 THE CHAMELEON WITH OUR FAC TORY EXPERTS Newark Factory All previous output records for the Newark Factory were broken during the month of May. Our Shipping Department staff was reported as being in a state of physical collapse the evening of May 29th, as 65,000 pounds of our products were handled by the fiveton truck during the day. In ad dition to truck shipments, large consignments of Export and Ware house goods were gotten away by the river route. An automatic nailing-machine is to be added to our Finishing De partment equipment. This ma chine will enable us to do away largely with hand nailing, which will not only enable us to handle our products more efficiently, but will also overcome the occasional trouble experienced in driving nails into cans. Our Foremen's Club Outing planned for Saturday, June 5th, had to be postponed, on account of necessity for practically all members of the Club remaining on the job in order to get out orders. The Outing will be held later, and will no doubt be enjoyed all the more in the knowledge that it has been well earned. The Newark plant continues to occupy the position at the head of the Top-Notcher Competition. Mr. Lawson was fortunate during the early part of the year in having a good output and thus got the lead, which he has been able to keep ever since. The capacity of the plant is being taxed to the ut most, but everything is in good shape, and all orders are being filled with despatch. Keen interest continues in the Foremen's Dividend Plan. At present the Receiving and Stores Department are in the lead. Chicago White Lead Department Everything in the White Lead Department is running full blast. Some new machines for mixing Lead in Oil have been added, and are turning out double our former output. The new pulverizer which has been installed is running to capacity, and turning out a very satisfactory product.
