Page 2 Dr. CharlesAuer With respectto industriahlygiene information,you should be aware thateach 3M plantthat produces sulfonatedfluorochemicalshas an industria'lhygienisotn staffand issupported by a corporateindustriahlygiene group. 3M's industriahlygiene program focuseson task-based exposure assessment and control.Exposures areidentifieadnd assessedqualitativelaynd/or quantitativelyQ.ualitativaessessmentsareperformed by an industriahlygienist.Quantitative assessmentsincludetask-basedpersonalsampling forcertain,specificfluorochemicalsand/or sourceor area sampling. The resultsofthe assessmentssupportdecisionson exposure control. Engineeringcontrolsarepreferredb,ut personalprotectiveequipment may be used on an interim basisor when effectivengineeringcontrolisnot feasible. In certainsituations3,M has gatheredpersonalindustriahlygienemonitoringdataforthe specific compounds and have includedthatdata inthe profile.In some situationst,hereisno chemicalspecificpersonalindustriahlygienemonitoringdata,but area/sourcemonitoringdataand/or surfacewipe sampling dataforthe specificmaterialmay be availableatthe facilityT.hese area/sourcesample resultsand/orsurfacewipe sample resultsareused totargetareaswith employee exposure potentialaspartof exposure assessmentunder 3M's industriahlygiene program and arenot measurements of actualemployee exposures.Hence, they are not included with thissubmission.In othersituationsn,eitherpersonalsampling datanor area/sourcedatahave been collectedfora specificchemical. The sample resultosf any airmonitoringarecompared to 3M's voluntaryexposure guideline(EG) of 0.1 mg/m3 (milligramsof fluorochemicalper cubicmeter of air)forvariousfluorochemical compounds The EG isan 8-hourtime-weightedaverage(TWA) personalbreathingzone exposure chosen to minimize potentialforuptake. Similartothe industriahlygiene program, each 3M facilittyhatproduces sulfonated fluorochemicalshas one or more environmentalengineerson-siteand isalsosupportedby a corporateand divisionlevelenvirorunentaolrganization.The envirorunentaelngineersassisthe process engineerswith calculationasnd emission estimates.The corporateenvirorunental organizationdevelops methods foranalyzingemissions.In additionto theseresources,several teams were establishedinrecentyearstoidentifyc,haracterizeand reduce specificfluorochemical emissions from the manufacturingsites. While analyticamlethods have improved over time,largevariabilitsytilelxistsforcertain matricesand compounds, so dataavailableforthisreportismostly of a qualitativneature.
