INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE KINETICS OP VINYL CHLORIDE SYNTHESIS TROM ACETYLENE AND HYDROGEN CHLORIDE IN THE PRESENCE Or INERT GAS
I VINYL CHLORIDE SYNTHESIS UNDER ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
Kinetic investigation of the synthesis of vinyl chloride from acetylene and hydrogen chloride mixture diluted by nitrogen are performed in the presence of HgCl activated carbon catalyst The rvork aimed at determination of parameters securing practically full consumption of acetylene at ltB va ious concentrations m the reaction zone
It is found that the concen^rat on of hydrog n chlo ide affects the tranBfo mat on degree exclusively up to a saturation Btate of tl e catalyst surface character stic for given temperatu e vhereby tl e dependence observed has the shape of the isotherme of type I (Tig 1 and 2)
The effect of the partial pressure of a etylene at low concei trations has a lmilar cha racter (Tig 6 and 7) At partial pressures of acetvlene above 200 mm Hg the transformation degree is proportional to acetylene concentration
The dependence of transformation degree on temperature vanes with concentration of reagents
One can distinguish three has c 1 etic Btages In the first one (Tig 3) at partial pressures of acetylene up to 30 mm Hg the depen lence is of exponential character -- the reaction rate itself cont ols the syntl esis In 11 e econ 1 sta e tl e lepe l lence is linear -- the reac tion rate ib comp rable vitli the adsorption and desorpt i rates of the jnthesis reagents In the tl lrd Btage tl e tra fonnation leg ee p actically 1 os not depe id on temperature -- the re tion s conti oiled by the ateB of adso ption an 1 deso pt on pro esseB (Tig )

would increase the predicted oidei of the leaction Either (15) or (16) would therefoie account for the
observed order of betw een 2 and 3 Although e\pre ion (16) predicts a dependence on inert Bas concentration which was not ob erved in the experiment with added nitrogen these cannot be regaided as conclusive nee nitrogen may w ell be much le s efficient than the parent molecule m such a reaction as step (12)
The imerse dependence of rate upon s/ j has not b en tested since unde the s/ conditions of all \ essels except Mj and M4 pronounced autocataly is occurred and the surface in these \ essels is behev ed to be re ponsible for initiation rather than termination
Autocatalysis aid the Effect of Incieascd Surface Volume Ratio--The major results of changirg the surface v olume ra 10 are to mcrea e the maximum rate of reaction and to produce sigi roid pressure-time curves (Figure 1) The rate of ethylene production \va also increa ed m pad ed v essels and v as found to b of orcier ca 0 5 m 1 2 di 1 loi oethane and w ith an acti\ ation energy of 47 heal mol1
If ethylene is pioduced Ly the homo eneous dechlonn ation of 1 2 dichloroethane then smilar qunrtiti s of chlo - should also be produced The fact that no molt i lar chlorine could be detected and tha tneieactior was foi nd to be both suiface dependent and unaffected by propene leads us to uBgest reactions (1 ) and (IS)
Such an expre sion has bee i found exp nmertalh and if this explanation is correct the activation energy for step (18) would be that obseried experimentahy i e 4 0 kcal mol1
The overall mechanism in high s/ reaction i essels can be pos ulated to be gnen by reactions (li) (--17) (18) (19) (11) (12) and (13) At maximum rate miti tion is then effected by the surface reactions (11) (--17) (18) and (19) [instead of the liomogeneou process (10)] This could account for the increa d rite observed upoi increasing sjo and al o the observed auto catalysis which could be due to the slow desorpt on tep (19)
Since the concenti ation of chlorine in the ga phase
would build up lowly it is not permissible to treat its
concentration as having achieved a stationary state The
quantitativ e treatment of the autocatalytic effect there fore lequires a more ngorous mathematical oluti n of
the ncce s rv du erential equations A consequence of our sugge ted mechanism for the
autocataly n is that the initial rate of reac ion at con start pressure in various vessels should decrease with mciease in s; bccau of the termination step (13) or (14)
The order of the initial rate should also be coir parable w ith that obtained under lo s/u conditions The initial rates m packed vessels weie low and difficult to measure
