Kehoe, M.D. Kettering Laboratory of Applied Physiology College of Medicine Cincinnati, Ohio Dear Doctor Kehoe: About a week ago we forwarded to you spot samples of blood and urine on five of our employees in the Leadburning Department. Today I am sending a short history and physical examination summary on these five men, along with a sketch of the L e a dbumer Shop. This sketch is rather diagramatic, but will give you some indication as to the size of the building, the window space and the ventilation. In addition, we are attaching a chart showing our findings on these employees in regard to blood count and stiple count. All of these men have spent a part of their time in the shop and a part of their time doing field work. The work in the field has consisted in large part in the placing of lead lining inside of a number of tanks of various sizes. Within the coming week, we shall return to you the containers which were forwarded to us and were, in excess of our actual needs. Since our work is coming to a close here, a good many of the men in the Lead Department are being terminated from employment. I do not believe that we will have any other cases on which spot samples might be indicated. He estimates that he has been a leadburner about twenty-two years of this period. He has never had to be absent except for two or three times because of a cold. He states that at times when several men are working in a tank with him he notices a sweet metallic taste in his mouth. He has never noticed weakness, or muscular incoordination. There has been no impairment of vision. No history of dizziness or lethargy. No history of convulsions, tremor, or tinnitis. PAST HISTORY: Operations - none. Fractures - none. Serious diseases - none. Systemic history - essentially negative. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Well developed and well nourished white male. Head - Eyes negative, ears negative, nose negative, mouth negative, throat negative. Chest - Negative findings. Heart - Regular rate,.rhythm, no murmurs. Blood pressure 118/74. Abdomen - Negative. Extremities - Reflexes are all physiological, no evidence of weakness. LAS:tmr tfE" 0005106 N 7243.01 April 20, 1943 FIRST AID RECORD: 6-1457 Laborer, 37, Married Has worked in leadburner department since September 1942 as a laborer Work consists of unrolling rolls of lead sheets, lining tanks with lead sheets, scraping lead and handling lead tubes. Most of the time has been outside the shop itself. Prior to working here did labor work at the construction of locks at Hastings, Minnesota, and just prior to that worked in construction at New Brighton, He has never worked at any occupation where he would have exposed himself to lead until the time when he started here in September, 1942, . PAST HISTORY: Previous illness - scarlet fever, measles, Herio- tomy - 1930, Venereal disease - denied. Family history - irrel evant, PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Well developed, fairly well nourished white male. Head - Eyes negative, ears negative, nose negative. Mouth - Teeth in very poor repair. Gums show gingivitis. Neck - Negative findings. Chest - Clear to auscultation and percussion. Heart - Blood pressure 124/70, no murmurs, no enlargement. Abdomen - Neg ative findings. Genitalia - Well healed right herniorraphy scar. Extremities - All reflexes physiological. April 17, 1943 FIRST AID RECORD: White. This employee has been a leadburner since 1906. About ten years of the period he has been doing other work. He has had peptic ulcers treated by gastroenterostomy ten years ago. His newological history is entirely negative. His muscular history is entirely negative. The man is very intelligent about the symptoms of lead intoxication. He has them memorized. PAST HISTORY: Operations - two gastroenterostmies in 1923 and 1933* Fractures - none. Serious diseases - peptic ulcer. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION : Head - Eyes negative, ears negative, nose negative, throat negative. Neck - Negative findings. Chest Clear to auscultation and percussion. Heart - Normal findings, Blood pressure 140/82. Abdomen - Two gastroenterostomy scars. Genitalia - Negative. Extremities - Reflexes are normal, no tremor. This has been almost continuous employement as a helper and burner When he is working in a closed place he notices sweet metallic taste, which will disappear when he is exposed to fresh air. Their is no positive digestive, muscular, or nervous system his tory. PAST HISTORY: Operations - None. Fractures - Right colles, age 11. Serious diseases - None. . PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS: Head - Eyes negative, ears negative, nose negative, throat negative. Neck - Negative. Chest - Clear to auscultation. Heart - No'murmurs. Blood pressure llx/70. Abdomen - Negative. Extremities - Very fine tremor of both hands. Reflexes are normal LAS:tmr 005109 April 28, 1943 FIRST AID RECORD: 6-6508 Laborer, White, Age 40, Married. This employee has been a laborer working in the Leadburners Shop for the past eight months. During this time he has been assigned to leadburner helper, doing such as assisting in moving sheets of lead and helping the leadburners with their equipment. All of his work has been confined to the Lead Shop. Prior to his employment to the Lead Shop he was working as a laborer in the field. Before his employment on this plant he had worked in several cafes and restaurants, and has also spent some years as a salesman. He has never performed any work which would bring him into direct contact with lead before going to work in our Lead Shop. PAST HISTORY: Usual childhood diseases. No serious illness or accidents. Tonsils removed in 1915. FAMILY HISTORY: Irrelevant PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: E.E.N. & T . : Essentially normal except that tonsils are out,. Also retraction of the gums with mild pyorrhea. HEART & LUNGS: No abnormal breath sounds. No rales. * Heart normal in size. No murmurs. Blood pressure on July 27, 1942 160/86, on March 17, 1943 135/30. ABDOMEN: Essentially negative.
