Overexposure occurred when brakes and bioke drums were cleaned using compressed a ir b lo w o ff. Ovv.'iexposure to r-shnsros fiber in the nir can occur during inspection and u.'pair upeijtions on liral.es, brake drums, clutches, and associated components uf these units when cumprcsscd air is used to blow off asbestos laden dust. In order to preclude overexposure hy inhalation of asbestos fiber during inspection and repair operations on vehicles, prc, res, and cranes the billowing procedure is recommended by the Industrial Hygiene Section of the Personnel and Org.iniijtion Stall: o Brakes, brake drums, clutches, and other associated components shall be cleaned using an industrial type vacuum cleaner with n filter system efficiency capable of capturing a three (3) micron particle site. The Industrial Hygiene Srction liar, evaluated and fuund crr-nptnble from the o:hcstns fiber emission standpoint the Sears llodiuck and Company, Catalog f/QHTI/U'IIN, forty-five (49) gallon Industrial vacuum cleaner for wrt or dry pickup. Accessory set. Catalog ft9GMGQ7J, consisting of crevice tool and brush must be used to allortl piopur pickup. Current (19/3) cost of this unit complete . with accessory set is approximately $109.00. o Disposal of asbestos laden waste from the vacuum cleaner shall be done by wet methods of dust suppression or by an employe performing such removal using a respirator specified by the U.5. Bureau " of Mines for pneumoconiosis producing dusts under Approvals 21C and Schedule 21. The Minnesota ' Mining and Manufacturing Company respirator. Model 8710, meets these requirements. o Disposal of asbestos laden waste from the vacuum cleaner shall be in scaled containers' labeled as per subparagtaphs (g) and (h), Fedora! Register 1910.03(a), pages 22143 and 22144 (OSHA). The . filters on the discharge ports should also be disposed of when they become loaded rather than attempting . ' to clean them. Thcso filters should be disposed of in properly labeled scaled containers. o Under no circumstances shall compressed air blowoff be used to clean brakes, brake drums, clutches and associated components.
