We thank you for your support in putting it together and "making it happen!" A very special Thank You to Debbie Neale, Program Chairperson for the Reception. As many of you know, Debbie has an inside track to many of the legislators and was able to do an outstanding job in selling them on our theme -- "AWARENESS OF THE PLASTICS INDUSTRY, IT'S PEOPLE, AND THE EFFECT WE HAVE ON THE ECONOMY." We were visited by 102 of the possible 132 legislators. We were publicly acknowledged with two formal resolutions -- one by the Senate and one by the House of Representatives. We acknowledged that we do employ 86,300 people in our industry and generate a tax base of $7,902,300,000, and that we are, indeed, vital to the economy of the Great State of Ohio. All in all, this was a great team effort put forth by our members. We have a good base established here, and we should be getting together soon to discuss how we might use that base to further the interests of the plastics industry in Ohio. V I K..|a ^p^rSoT6 r^^pWEST I OHIO SPECIAL EDITION February 26, 1985 OHIO LEGISLATORS TURN OUT FOR SPI EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION Of the 132 member Ohio Legislature, 103 Senators and Representatives attended the SPI Ohio Chapter Legislative Reception/Industry Exhibit in Columbus February 26th. The event featured 39 exhibitors displaying plastics products manufactured in nearly every comer of the State. Legislators viewed exhibits of plastics products manufactured by large and small companies in Ohio. The diversity of products ran the gamut from plastics packaging, computer and appliance parts, to automotive parts, food and beverage containers, foam plastics insulation, and more. Moldmakers and the color compounding industry were represented and many major resin suppliers supported the event, as well. In addition to the product and service information, many exhibitors featured company employment, sales and capital exuenditure figures as part of their table top display. What does this mean to the Ohio Plastics industry? It means your Legislators took the opportunity to personally view a cross-section of the industry, its technology, and its contributions to industrial and economic progress. Perhaps most importantly, the Reception/Exhibit gave Legislators the opportunity to meet and mingle with the people of the Ohio plastics industry. Many thanks go to Exhibit Chairman, Deborah Neale of B F. Goodrich, for her effective contact with the legislators. HOUSE AND SENATE DRAFT RESOLUTIONS RECOGNIZING SPI OHIO CHAPTER RESOLUTIONS (Cant'd) The House resolution, presented to Ohio Chapter Chairman, Jim Gerolium by Ohio Representative Rocco Colonna said in part, "Recognizing the Ohio Chapter of The Society of the Plastics Industry, the 116th General Assembly are pleased to commend the SPI Ohio Chapter for sponsoring a legislative reception to inform and educate Ohio Legislators about the scope of the plastics industry." The resolution mentions the size of the industry in Ohio; $1.5 billion payroll, 86 thousand jobs, more than 1200 firms, and a value of shipments well over $7.9 billion. It says that over 85% of all manufactured products contain some element of plastics, making plastics a significant component of every major segment of our country's industries, particularly in highly technological fields like electronics and health care. The resolution concludes with, "We recognize the plastics industry in Ohio for its contributions to this state and its citizens, and salute the Ohio Chapter of The Society of the Plastics Industry for sponsoring this legislative reception." The Senate resolution says much the same, and includes a "salute (to) the invaluable economic contributions the plastics industry has made to the State of Ohio." The Senate resolution was presented by Senator Eugene Watts. Recognizing the important role plastics play in the Ohio economy and the industry's efforts in communication and education through SPI, both the Ohio House and Senate passed resolutions praising the SPI Ohio Chapter and the 1985 Legislative Reception.
