Enders (Plant Manager - Trenton Chemical) CIMS Number 417-05-19 Subject: ASBESTOS EXPOSURES IN DEPARTMENT 9847 - TOLEDO MACHINING On March 8, 1976 a study was made to determine the exposure of employees on the disc brake assembly line, Department 9847, at the Toledo Machining Plant to asbestos dust generated during the handling of brake pads supplied by the Trenton Chemical Plant. This study was made at the joint request of A. E. Finch of Toledo Machining and E. R. Lombard of Trenton Chemical, as a result of employee complaints regarding excessive asbestos exposures at this loca tion following a process change in the manufacture of these pads at the Trenton Plant. The results obtained from analysis of these samples are shown on the attached data sheet. Although none of the samples indicated exposures in excess of the present allowable limit, samples (1), (2), and (3) were in excess of the allowable limit scheduled to become effective on July 1, 1976. These exposures appeared to result primarily from the transfer of loose brake pads from the open skids and stacking of the pads at the pad installation work stations, as a result of loose grinding fines remaining on the surface of the pads. Mr. E. R* Lombard of the Trenton Plant, who accompanied the writer during this investigation, agreed that the operations created airborne asbestos dust, and indicated that the management at the Trenton Chemicals Plant would take action to reduce the amount of loose dust on the brake pads supplied to the Toledo Machining Plant. If the amount of loose dust cannot be reduced before July 1, 1976, it will be necessary to require the involved employees at the Toledo plant to wear approved air-purifying respirators to protect against exposure to asbestos dust. hm Attachment cc: F# A.
