To simplify this data, only a single, page of any listed unit is included. Some will show hand fired coal ratings, some will have oil capacities. By the use of the factors which we list below, the rating for any fuel can be calculated. REPLACEMENT SIZING This catalog data is being sent to you to assist you in sizing replacement boilers. Selection of a boiler on the basis of the size of the existing equipment does not re lieve you of the responsibility for determining the total load to be carried by the new unit(s). Due regard must 3e given to the condition of the system and to all addi- This listing has been compiled lo enable you to size 'tional loads added since the original installation, includ boiler replacements. Since many1 existing installations, while originally sized for hand fired operation will now j be automatically fired, jwe recommend your calculatin; <|T1 (istedjunitston the old SBI basis as follows: ing, but not necessarily limited to, service hot water, additional heating equipment, pipe loss, start up allow ances, etc. (1) For hand fired coal note below. Some were attached to the base ashpit doors and in the process of conversion to automatic firing, the identification is lost. Ratings so calculated are comparable in-theinwsage to '"`'current SBI GROSS outputs. *y' Several reliable alternatives axe available. Note: This does not apply to our Scotch Marine Boilers other than the original Scottie Junior riveted, HM-6 through HM-30. No other Scotch Marine Boilers have been offered by us for coal fired operation. FIRING All of our recent catalogs'have /listed firing rates at /150% or 141.5% of^SBI nating. On the case of such a catalog listing, the|firmg rates may be safely followed. (1) Look for the boiler stamping as shown Appendix, Page V. This includes the boiler number and the safety valve capacity. The latter is an excellent basis for selecting a replacement size, in the same fuel (2) Identify boiler type; up draft, downdraft, firebox, compact, Scotch Marine, horizontal return tubular, etc. -^It is not advisable toycalculate the firing rates on our ,y (3) Check the number, diameter and length of boiler K older boilers in the 4earie manner. Those boilers that. ^ ' y tubes, direct and return, and compare with current q have been installed for some time, the ratings for which y-', v Bulletin 100--3-100H and/or listings of obsolete ' have been calculated as above, should have their firing' ? J rates selected on -frf.capacity.^Furthermore, the units on Appendix pages I, II, III, IV. ] overall efficiency of automatic gas or oil fired boilers .4 should be assumed to be 75% (stoker fired units as '*' 65%). On this basis, the firing rate would be determined (4) Compare size as determined #3, with dimensions of shells listed in this booklet, including the very as follows: \ t i^ cP V $* Square feet EDR (SBI) x 240 Fuel value in BTU x .75(Notea. BTU efficiency) -- Firing Rate\v iV7 important inside firebox dimensions. Only when all three, tube, outside and inside firebox dimen sions coincide, can you be sure of exact boiler number. BTU content of fuels is listed below: Coal-Stoker Fired - 12.000 BTU/LB. (5) Be sure the unit in question was made in Kewanee, Illinois. Some years ago, Fitzgibbons Boiler Com 11.000 BTU/LB. pany sold a unit under the name of Kewanee 10.000 BTU/LB. which was not ours. Gas Oil - Light #2 Heavy #5 & #6 1,000 BTU/FT.3 140.000 BTU/GAL. 150.000 BTU/GAL. In general, our units have four or three digit numbers. In the case of four digits, the first two identify the model eg M 8080 is a Scotch Marine boiler, 8000 series. Note a. 65% efficiency stoker fired The three digit numbers use the first number to identify the model eg #419 is a 400 series updraft with 4" tubes. Rating EXAMPLE #419 - Heating surface 1168 FT2 iX ^1168 x 17= 19,856 FT2/EDR (SBIX'O'-^V/.$* Y r .> Firing Rate In both cases the last two numbers identify the size or capacity within a given model number. A word about conversion of downdraft bituminous (smokeless) boilers. These units had a tubular water grate between the upper and lower firebox areas. The surface of these tubes is included in the cataloged heating surface When converted to gas, oil or stoker, this S' 19,856 FT2 x 240 BTU _ 4,765,440 BTU S- \ 150,000 BTU/GAL x .75 112,500 BTU = 42.4 Gal.' water grate need not be removed if the installer properly sets the burner equipment so that fire will not impinge on the water grate.
