Leading the discussion will be Dr. Gary Ter Haar, Vice President, Environment and Health, and Dr. Walter Hulen, Associate Corporate Medical Director, both with Ethyl Corporation. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 30, 1987, in Ethyl's 11th Floor Conference Room, LNJB Building, corner of 5th Street and Florida Blvd. The study would look at cancer incidence in the workers and track possible causative factors over the years by obtaining data on lifestyle (smoking/diet), medical, residential, social and occupational history, and other pertinent factors. The study would be conducted under the direction of Dr. Pelayo Correa, professor of pathology at LSU Medical Center, New Orleans. Dr. Correa is an internationally respected researcher and has been a moderating force in the Louisiana cancer debate. He has continually stressed that good studies must be done before drawing any conclusions about cancer causation. Dr. Correa has done some exceptionally fine work that indicates 90% of Louisiana's lung cancer is caused by smoking. The claims about Louisiana cancer incidence and pollution are based on very limited data and mostly allegation.
