The current time-weighted average for airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers to which any employe may be exposed shall not exceed five fibers, longer than five micro meters, per cubic centimeter of air. After July 1, 1976. exposure shall not exceed two fibers, longer than five micro meters, per cubic centimeter of air. Therefore, all asbestos shall be handled, mixed, applied, re moved, cut, scored, or otherwise worked in a wet state suffi cient to prevent the emission of airborne fibers; No asbestos cement, mortar, coating, grout plaster, or similar material containing asbestos shall be removed from bags, cartons, or other containers in which they are shipped, without being wetted enclosed, or ventilated. Asbestos has been replaced by fiberglass and Kaowool in some applications. Other asbestos substitutes are being investigated by the Hazardous Materials Committee. Asbestos paper is no longer approved for use. Cloth, tape, and conduit containing asbestos are approved for use for specific applications where approved by the Safety Department, Powdered asbestos, used by the pipe shop and boiler house, requires proper personal protec tive equipment, and the inventory must be kept in locked storage Any other use of asbestos must be approved by the Safety Depart ment .
