SEP |?1968 Asbestos Fiber la Dwr Sararad breads of baar ara being examined for tbalr asbestos flbar eoetaat. Tbs eaeples vara all purchased oa the open Market and rapraaant a croaa section of the various filtration techniques currently need by tba braving industry. The techniques can be awarlzed aa follows: A. Diatoalta precoat and diatoaiita body feed. B. Fibrous* precoat and dlatonlte body feed. C. Fibrous pulp** filters. D. MiUlpore neabrene filters. Vihreva"precoats can be either dlatoolte-ashestoe, a.g. J-M FZBSB-IXO or asbestos-cellulose. Fibrous pulp filters are pads of cellulose and asbestos usually prepared at tba brewery. They are used without body feed. At various stages la the brewing process, different filtration techniques are used. Fiber In Water 8yatena All of tbo data concerning the fiber content of municipal water ayatema baa' been reported previously. In addition, a report baa been laaued covering the details of the fiber analysis method. Aa an adjust to tbo municipal wter system study, a program la now underway to determine both the procieion and accuracy of the method used for quantitative fiber estimation. This study will Include the effects of sample preparation and operator Judgement. The TBAKSITB Pipe test loop le now operating satisfactorily. Three sms* eesslve rune have been aada using water with a pH of 5*7 and aero hardness. After about b00,000 gallons of water passed through the test pipe, It wes necessary to terminate the runs because the sample filter was completely loaded with "debris" from the pipe. All the water entering the pipe le filtered through a 0.8 micron Milllpore filter. Microscopic analysis of the material collected on the sample filter re vealed primarily asbestos fiber and silica. There was no evidence of cement gel. A more detailed quantitative analysis of tbass runs is now underway. cc: 8. Spell I. M. Fenner
