Ericson J. H. Schachter G. S. Orensteln A. M. Rosenberg P. R. Strand Gentlemen: This, is intended to keep you up to date on our activities with EPA and the continued use of MK-3. Last Thursday, June 15, the EPA Steering Committee met in Washington for the purpose of considering;and accepting-proposed standards for the usef of asbestos, mercuryi~and?beryllium.' In anticipation of that^. meeting, Bruce Williams and I have met vlth the EPA. people responsible, for wrffiLng the standards (Durham, N.C.) and for enforcing them (Rockville, Maryland). In addition we have written to the Acting'Assistant Administrator for Air and. Water Programs (Washington D. C.) voicing our objections to their proposed standards. For whatever reasons, the proposed standard has been sent back to the North Carolina engineering office to be rewritten. We do not know at this time if MK-3 will or will not be excluded from the regulations. In any event the effective date for any changeover from MK-3 to MK-4 will be delayed from the previous mid-July estimate to mid-August and possibly later. We are exploring what actions to take after that If the final outcome is unfavorable. I will attempt to keep you informed as additional information becomes available. In the meantime, keep a good inventory position for MK until at least Mid-August. \ TPF/se JUN 19 1972
