Bolger: Anti-Corrosive Faints Z have your letter of February 19, 1969 and the answers to the queationa you aaked cannot be generallaed. First off, in the determination of durability of the various anti-corrosive paints, consideration must be given as to how the testing was conducted; the environment; coating thickness, etc. Red lead has proved itself for a wide variety of exposures. Some coatings evaluations and conclusions reached by the Red Lead Tech nical Committee of LIA on them are contained in the attached Red Lead Technical Letter Mo. 15. As for lead's toxicity there ia no question that, improperly handled, it can be toxic, but this is also true of many of the other pigments and chemicals used in paints. In welding steel on which any paint or coating is at the seam, weldability is affected. As for toxicity during welding, again, if the job is properly handled (such as in the open air or with air supplied respirators in confined areas), lead paints pose no store problems than you would find with most other coatings generally used.
