Kehoe Kettering Laboratory College of Medicine University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, Ohio 45219 ' Dear Dr. Kehoe: We recently received a lead analysis on three samples of beer we submitted to your laboratory to the attention of Mr. J . Scholak. Samples A and B had been exposed to one of our experimental glasses. Sample C was a control sample of unexposed beer. As you will note, a detectable amount of lead was picked up. We found pretty good correlation with our own lead analysis run here, so that your test served to confirm this. We were greatly surprised that this much lead was detected, and our test was exaggerated by a factor of about 12 times in the ratio of area of glass exposed per unit volume. In an actual tank applica tion, therefore, we could reduce the lead figures by a factor of 12 to give approximately .02 parts per million pick up. In addi tion, our exposure time was more severe, by a factor of about 4, than would be expected in normal usage. Now that we have some data, we would like to proceed to contact the FDA for an opinion on whether a glass of this type would be accept able or not. If it is not acceptable, we would then like to obtain from them a statement about what would be permissible. The outcome of a statement like this would be to finally recommend to our people whether to discontinue further work on lead bearing glasses. There is still the feeling here that certain products containing lead have received the sanction of the FDA and, therefore, they must have some criterion on which to judge. The products we have in mind are the lead containing dinnerware glasses and lead containing solders for food processing equipment. If this is so, then they must have some limitations that they could give us as a goal. Would you consider the results and then let us have your comments as to our taking this next step. We have in mind that if you are in Washington some time, one or two of us from here might join you for a discussion for the appropriate FDA people. We don't feel that we can make a decision on whether or not.to proceed until we do have an actual meeting with the FDA people. We will look forward to hearing from you. Very truly yours, OJB:ek Att. 0. J.
