The locations need to start meeting the new PEL levels, but several companies have appealed the new standard. Shell now has a Port-A-Count which is a portable device to perform respiratory fit-testing in the field. Shell will ask for a variance to use this device for three standards: benzene, formaldehyde, and asbestos. Phillips also discussed the need for a corporate decision (involving Legal, E&P, S&IH) regarding worker refusal to take the emergency urinary-phenol test. Rivard said that a tentative accord had been reached with Corporate Medical on the issue of recording pleural plaques. Problems with asbestos levels may arise when removing this lining. Functions with concerns about this issue should discuss with Ransdell/Phillips.
