Below is the last email exchange I had with Otto Wong about the responsibilities of Fudan. This occurred because of the hiring of the new person for the Tumor Hospital NHL cases. I wanted to know who was paying for her. In mid-2006 I contacted Otto and Rob Schnatter to confirm we needed to extend the Fudan contract into 2007 and if anything should be changed (new tasks, old tasks going away?). They confirmed the need for Fudan's continued assistance with the study and no changes to the scope of work. Physician-epidemiologist refers to Professor Fu. He is still involved in the case-control study. Most recently he worked with the Tumor Hospital on the NHL patient issue. But how time he actually spent on the case-control study, I don't know. As for the data handler, I know Fudan is responsible for data entry and managing the database at Fudan, but again I am not in a position to determine the level of effort required. As for the expense items, I think they are all necessary. I assume by "hospital coordinators," it means the Clinical Coordinators at the participating hospitals. Of course, we will continue to need their help in sending us both AML and NHL patients. The Clinical Coordinator at the Tumor Hospital is the pathologist in charge. He is responsible for sending us biological samples and supposedly coordinates with us in setting up interviews. As you know, he has not been doing a good job in working with us setting up interviews. Ms. Lu was hired to ensure that (1) we will be able contact and interview all the newly diagnosed NHL patients at the Tumor Hospital, and (2) she will try to contact and interview as many "perviously missing" NHL patients as possible. (By the way, she and I had a meeting in Shanghai before I came back. She reported that she was able to contact and interview several "missing" NHL patients. And that was only her first week. I was quite encouraged. My assistant at Fudan maintains a weekly discussion with her.) So, Ms. Lu's role is new and quite different from the current Clinical Coordinator. I don't who is paying for her. You may want to clarify this with Professor Fu or Dr. Irons. If you need to clarify certain items with Professor Fu immediately, you can let me know and I can call him.
