In the 18th and 19th centuries, engines powered by steam gave rise to the Industrial Revolution and transformed society Steam continues to power the world today. More than half of the world's electricity is generated with steam. Industries of every kind rely upon steam for critical processes. And as questions grow regarding the price and supply of hydrocarbons, the role of steam in the global economy may again expand. Elliott is born from steam The water tube boiler (1856) was a major innovation in terms of boiler efficiency, pressure and safety. But the boiler tubes often became fouled by minerals in the feed water. In 1895, William Swan Elliott patented a revolutionary boiler tube cleaner and formed a company to sell his invention. In 1910, Elliott Company was incorporated in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1914, Elliott moved to its present location in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Mr. Elliott quickly grew the company through acquisitions related to steam technology heaters, lubricating systems, extractors and separators. Supplying turbomachinery to the world Elliott acquired the Kerr Turbine Company of Wellsville, New York in 1923, transitioning from a supplier of auxiliary equipment to a manufacturer of steam turbine drivers. Later acquisitions added air and gas compressors to Elliott's product portfolio, and the turbine line-up grew to range from single valve YR turbines to multi-valve turbines up to 100,000 HP. As a division of Carrier Corporation (1957-1981), Elliott became a world leader in compression technology, supplying equipment throughout the world to industries such as oil and gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), ethylene and many others. During this same period, Elliott laid the groundwork for its global network of service shops and field service teams that today deliver comprehensive service for rotating equipment from any manufacturer. Elliott today A new Elliott company, Elliott Turbomachinery Company, Inc. was created in 1981 after Carrier's acquisition by United Technologies Corporation. Following a management buyout from United Technologies, in 2000 Elliott became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ebara Corporation, headquartered in Haneda, Japan. The relationship with Ebara began in 1968 when Ebara licensed the technology from Carrier to build Elliott turbines and later compressors. In 1975 Ebara opened a new factory in Sodegaura, Japan to build turbomachinery using Elliott's designs. Today, Elliott is again named Elliott Company, and the integrated operations of the Elliott Group provide customers throughout the world with reliable, efficient rotating equipment and service. On July 31,1957, Elliott Company became an operating division of Carrier Corporation. The consolidation of Elliott with Carrier opened a new chapter in Elliott's history. The two companies' combined expertise in centrifugal compressors led to decades of engineering leadership in rotating equipment for oil and gas production, petrochemicals, refining, and liquefied natural gas. Carrier's international resources served as the foundation for the development of Elliott's own global service and sales networks. In 2010 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the original Elliott Company. /As we commemorate this centennial, we are pleased to share with you a series of significant events from each of Eliott's first 10 decades. PAST PRESENT FUTURE 19102010 . .construction began on a modern brick office building." In 1914 Elliott Company moved from Pittsburgh to a 33-acre site 23 miles southeast in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. By June all of the manufacturing machinery had been moved to the new location. Elliott had 32 employees when the company moved to Jeannette. By 1917, that number had grown to over 200. The modem brick office building pictured above (right) still exists and is now known as Building 14. In 201Owe will commemorate the 10CP anniversary ofthe foundation of the original Elliott Company. .As we approach this centennial, we are pleased to share with you a series of significant events from each of Ellbtt's first 10 decades. 19102010 "The acquisition of Kerr Turbine resulted in a major expansion in the products Elliott offered and the markets it served." Kerr Turbine was established in 1904 by Charles Kerr to manufacture steam turbines, generators, and gears. Kerr was one of the first to recognize the advantages of small steam turbines over reciprocating engines for driving industrial machinery such as pumps and blowers. Kerr Turbine produced several firsts - the first mechanical drive turbine, the first small multistage turbine, and the first Pelton wheel turbine manufactured in the US. With the purchase of Kerr Turbine in 1923, and the subsequent purchase in 1926 of Ridgway Dynamo & Engine Company, Elliott Company took on a new role as a major manufacturer of primary drivers for industrial and power generating equipment. In 2010 we will commemorate the 100h anniversary of the foundation of the original Eliott Company. As we approach this centennial, we are pleased to share with you a series of significant events from each of Blbtt's first 10 decades. PAST'PRESENT'FUTURE 19102010 . .the Elliott single-inlet, overhung compressor became the standard of the industry." An offshoot of Elliott's purchase of Ridgway Dynamo and Engine Company was the acquisition by Elliott of Rateau, Battu, Smoot and Company in New York. The company was founded by Dr. A. C. E. Rateau of France. He is generally associated with Rateau staging in steam turbines, but Dr. Rateau also built the first centrifugal compressor around the turn of the century. In the 1930s Elliott engineers modernized the Rateau compressor design to produce O-line and later P-line blowers. Many of the innovations of this design are still used in single-stage compressors today. In 201 Owe will commemorate the 10Oh anniversary of the foundation of the original Eliott Company. As we approach this centennial, we are pleased to share with you a series of significant events from each of Eliott's first 10 decades. PAST PRESENT FUTURE 19102010 "We've got a rocket ship here." - "Fearless Freddie" Agabashian, driver, Cummins Diesel Special In 1940 Elliott obtained a license from Dr. Alfred J. Buchi of Switzerland, the inventor of the modem turbocharger, to manufacture gas- turbine-driven superchargers (or 'turbochargers') for four-cycle diesel engines. The Buchi turbochargers that Elliott built were the first manufactured in the United States. Turbochargers became a substantial business for Elliott. In the 1952 Indianapolis 500, a Cummins diesel race car equipped with an Elliott designed turbocharger was the first diesel-powered vehicle to start from the pole position. In just two years, 1955 and 1956, Elliott manufactured more than 9,000 turbochargers. By the time Elliott sold the business in 2001, the company had manufactured more than 42,000 turbochargers for use in locomotives, ships, and hundreds of industrial applications. In 201Owe will commemorate the 1OCA anniversary of the foundation of the original Eliott Company. As we approach this centennial, we are pleased to share with you a series of significant events from each of Eliott's first 10 decades. PAST PRESENT FUTURE V 19102010 "Our plant air package has really caught on, and sales are booming. " In 1962, Elliott introduced a groundbreaking new product that became one of its most successful. The Plant Air Package, or PAP, was a small centrifugal air compressor package that supplied oil-free compressed air for industry. Elliott's PAP had several distinct advantages over the reciprocating air compressors then offered by other manufacturers - a smaller footprint, lower maintenance costs and quieter operation. Before selling the product line in 2003, Elliott built and sold 3,800 PAPs. Many of them are still in operation today. In 2010 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the original Elliott Company. As we commemorate this centennial, we are pleased to share with you a series of significant events from each of Elliott's first 10 decades. PAST PRESENT FUTURE 19102010 "Service takes off. " In the 1980s, Elliott opened service shops in Jacksonville, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Donora, Pennsylvania; and Basingstoke, England. Together with the field service group in Switzerland and the Houston shop that opened several years earlier, these operations formed the foundation for Elliott's global service network today. In 1984, the Donora shop chartered this C5A cargo plane to ship a repaired compressor to Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada.
