AfiREfiTOfi POST
On May 6 and 7, 1970, Haskell laboratory sponsored a company-wide seminar to discuss the health effects of Inhalation of asbestos and means of measuring and controlling the- potential batard. As a result of this meeting, certain agreements
were aade in regard to asbestos dust-criteria, sampling techniques, and reccaMndationfi on the use of protective equipment. This information was transmitted to our Textile fibers plants in a letter dated May 22, 1970, entitled, "Asbestos Dust Control." Along with this letter, we distributed a manual developed at the Old Hickory plant in November of 1969 which covered the subject of asbestos dust control in considerable depth.
Because of the hasards of exposure to certain asbestos dust particles, manage-
(ment is concerned with the proper control of this environmental hazard. Ve have been questioned by ease of our plente ee to when en engineering Standard will be written coveriac recommended asbeetoe duet criteria, control*, end protective measure*. I have discussed this question with the chairmen or Standards Engineers of the Air Quality,
Arocesa Insulation, and Safety and Fire Protection Subcommittees and discover that none of these consider asbestos control within the scope of their charter. It would seem that control of asbestos dust should be an item of high priority in the protection of the health and welfare of our employees. Ve, therefore, recommend that you review the charters of the various Standards Subccadttees and, if you feel as we do, that this subject be aade an active item for 1971.
Ve will be glad to furnlah any background information that we have on this subject that the selected subecemittee may require.
