EXEMPTION FROM MARPOL ANNEX VI REGULATION 14.4 FOR M/V MIDNIGHT SUN (IMO 9232278) ANO M/V NORTH STAR (IMO 9232280)
Dear Sir/Ma'am:
Your request for an exemption from the requirements of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI. Regulation 14.4 is approved for the North American emission control area (ECA). for the M/V MIDNIGHT SUN (IMO 9232278) and the M/V NORTH STAR (IMO 9232280). This temporary exemption is approved through September 30, 2016 and is based on the permit issued by the Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dated July 31, 2012. This exemption is granted in accordance with Regulation 3 of MARPOL Annex VI, which allows vessels to conduct trials for the development ofcmissions and control technologies and engine design programs. This permit only provides for an exemption with respect lo the fuel sulfur content requirements set forth in Annex VI Regulation 14.4; it otherwise neither amends nor repeals any other requirement or authority of any applicable provision of Annex VI or of law.
The cognizant Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection (OCMI) will make an appropriate endorsement on the vessels' Certificate of Inspection. The authorized classification society whom issues the International Air Pollution (IAPP) Certificate for the vessels is authorized to indicate this exemption from the North American ECA fuel sulfur content requirements on the Supplement to the IAPP Certificate.
