Single-Pigment House Paint Mixed with a Stick
For many years before ond after I860, point was miie'd on the job with a stick, from whit? lead, linseed oil and turpentine. No better way to make or mix paint w q s then known. This hand mixture produced a paint which gave very fair service -- provided, of course, thot the white lead and linseed oil were both of good quality. True, this paint lost its gloss quite soon, took on o grayish, dirty cost from the oir of the average community and chalked excessively -- but, in
"Jed Hoskins*" day, nobody knew how to do anything to prevent this. So, when Jed fold his customers that hand mixed lead ond oil point was the best and most economical to use, he was teUing them the "gospel truth" as far as he or onybody else then knew. It was good paint and liill h. As a matter of fact, lead and oil are the bases of o// GOOD house points, even to this vety day. But ,..

All house points ore mode from two types of in*

Pigments give point its hiding or covering power.
Liquids give it life, spreading capacity ond

The most important liquid used in good house
point is linseed oil, which hinds the pigments to
gether into o weather-resisting him.
The pigment most commonly used in good
house paint is white lead. For many years, os previously stated, white lead ond linseed oil were
the on/y ingredients used in good house points

pigment -- white lead. Modern multi'pigtnetif house paints of good
quality likewise contain white lead ond linseed oil
-- but they also contain certain other pigmeots
in addition to white lead.4

HOW SHERWIN-WILLIAMS
I
Some multi-pigment house paints simply hove zinc oxide, added to the white lead and oil Zinc oxide is considerably white/ thon white lead --' and imports extra whiteness to paint. It also retards chalking, Bet zinc is not a desir able pigment to .<$e alone -- because it be* comes extremely hard ond somewhat brittle, causing the point film to crock and chip.
To overcome this disadvantage of zinc ox

exclusively by Hie Sherwin-Williams Co.
OZLO--Tlie Vitamins of Paint
Ozio is to paint what vitamins are to food, it adds extra strength and lift to the paint film -- enables it to resist the damaging effects of exposure for a longer period of time. Ozio is a combination of basic lead sulphate ond zinc oxide -- but It is no/ merely lead ond zinc mechanically mixed together. Ozio is one pigmen/ -- on actual chemical union of these two pigments. When Ozio is odded to the fine qualify basic lead carbonate (white lead) in making SWP House Point, it mokes 5WP whiter thon white lead... tougher thon white lead,., and gives the SWP film its delightful smooth Dirty, imudgy. `Vocther scai/eif," rteedl pointing.

possible with white lead and oil This means that fewer gallons of SWP will be needed to do a good paint job on your house.
Slower Chalking Oslo has a much slower chalking rote than white leod and has higher resistance to sulphur gases. Thof's why a paint job done with SWP House Point looks clean ond fresh so much longer. Noturally you want on economical point job. Anybody with good sense does. But a lot of folks with plenty of good sense have byen misled into thinking that low priced {or o cheap price per gallon) paint is the way to get an economical point job.
Nothing could possibly be further from ihe truth.

How to Judge Point from "Piffle"
It is certainly appqrent fo you that a great deal of adulferation is going on under the guise of
paint making. Some states have tried <0 protect
the public from wasting money on cheap, worth*' less paints by requiring manufacturers to print the formulae of their paints on the labels of the cons. This would help if the average mon knew how to distinguish between the chemical names of cheap ingredients and the chemical names of quality ingredients. For example--calcium car* bonafe sounds as good as lead carbonate. But
what 0 whole of a difference! Coicium carbon
ate is chalk -- one of the cheapest and poorest ingredients, used only in the cheapest house points -- while lead carbonate is one of the finest and best.
Even if the overoge man did under stand the chemical names of pig* menfs, he wouldn't know what com binations or percentages of these pigments make the most satisfactory house point. For example -- too much of even a good pigment results in an unbalanced paint, uneconomical to use. But how could the overage man be expected fo know that? He can't -- therefore, the sofest way Is to buy

When o house needs painting -- if Is not a question of, How much wiH painting cost? The real question is, How much more wiR it cost no/ to paint?
Your home represents one of the most, if not Me most important investment of a lifetime. It affords shelter and comfort for your family -- and more. It gives you standing in your com* munity which can be had in no other way.
There are, therefore, two practical reasons for repointing H periodically, first -- to protect the surface against decay and prevent costly repairs. Second -- to preserve its beauty and your pride of ownership. You cannot afford to be ashamed of your home.
When pointing is neglected too long (that is, to the point where the point film has lost both its decorative and protective values), water seeps into the wood. Nolls loosen, permitting mere water to seep in and further to nut the noils. Crocks soon open up, and the rote of decoy constantly accelerates. Eventually, this damage must be repaired. After repairs have been made, you wfll repaint to prevent a recur* rence of the same repair bill. In short -- failure to paint when painting is needed results ulti mately in paying for both repairs and repaint* ing. Timely painting wiH save you the cost of the repair bill.
Furthermore, the actual resole or mortgage volue of a weR pointed home far exceeds that of one which looks nm-down-at-the-heds. There is no better proof of this than the fact that todoy, when many families are refinancing their homes through HOLC, the Government insists that the property be repainted if paint is needed.

Even the best of paint weors out in time. Wheth. er this means two, three, four, five or more years, depends upon the quality of the paint and the skill used in applying it.
Many home owners hove their property re painted when the surface becomes soiled and before the point film hos lost its pro/ectire value. PREPARING TH
Correct preparation of the surface before
pointing is of greatest importance, if flaked or peeled pain! is not removed, if cracks ond noil holes ore not filled with putty, If loose or warped boards are not repaired, the new paint film soon loses its protective qualities. New cracks appear over old cracks... new point, applied over old blisters and flakes, soon pulls loose ond moisture creeps in. In a short time much of the value and peasing appearance of the new paint job is lost.
Paint which is floking or peeling should be burned off. Scaly point should be scraped off.
Loose boards should be nailed in place ond rolled sections replaced. Window trim and sashes should be scroped corefully, since these ports of the house usually suffer most from ex posure to the elements.
UsePutly -- It Costs Little--Saves Lots
Mony people do not realize the important port
that putty ploys in maintaining 0 satisfactory
ond pleasing point job. Be sure that all windows are thoroughly put
tied at all times; otherwise, moisture will pene trate during driving roins. This causes the wood to swell, often placing o pressure on the gloss greater than it can withstand, A cracked win dow pone is the result.
In addition, the point peels from the portion of the frame where the moisture has penetrated, because the hot sun draws It towords the sur face. The moisture accumulates in the form of blisters under the point film . . , and remains there os long os the elasticity of the point film can withstand the stretching process, eventually the blister breaks, dries out, ond the paint peels from the surface.
Thus, it is apparent that lack of putty couses not only cracked window panes but peeled paint as well.
