S. Cain, C. 0. Turner, E. B. Robinson, H. E. Bonds, and visitor Mr. T. B. Bonney. Old Business: Mr. Cain reported on atmospheric mercury in Chlor-Alkali Department. Concentrations are still higher than desirable in places. New ventilating fans have helped but there is seme indication that P air washers may be desirable to prevent recycling of mercury vapor. Respirators are being worn when operations are going on that might cause high mercury concentrations in atmosphere. New wash rooms and eating facilities have not been completed yet. Pipe maintenance remains a problem, particularly between inlet end boxes and mercury fume recovery equipment. The possibility of complying with a 0.05 mg/cu. meter MAC should it be adopted was discussed. The Leigh instrument has been received and testing is being done in Point Comfort for gaseous fluorides. Tests have been scheduled to determine chlorine emission from the Ingot Plant. An insurance claim by an employee for fluoride poisoning vas discussed. Mr. T. B. Bonney and a representative of the 3M Company are at the plant in connection with testing of prototype of an activated alumina mask. The mask features a replaceable, throw-away filter medium and has been redesigned for a better fit and has been made easier to put on and remove. Concentrations remain below MAC. Ventilating fans have been installed in Building 17 shower room with some improvement in ventilation. A request from Refining maintenance crews for screened eating areas was discussed at some length. It was pointed out that the main problem in these areas was housekeeping. Messrs. Fritts and Mulligan will collaborate on testing certain types of covered garbage cans in the eating areas. Engineering work is continuing on removal of dust and repair of catwalks in potroom monitors. An authorization has been approved and work is in progress on installing better dust-collecting facilities in mold shop for working Marinite. New Business: Mr. Mulligan reported that the expanded facilities in the Refining locker room had almost entirely been occupied. About ten sets of lockers remain unoccupied. A meeting was scheduled for Mr. Bonney and interested local people to meet with Mr. Wahlsten on November 19 regarding hygiene and environmental problems in Chlor-Alkali Department.
