Y. 10017 TeJephone: (212) 532-2373 Environmental Health Department November 6, 1981 To: From: Subject: All Participants in the October 29-30, 1981 Physicians Seminar on Occupational Lead Poisoning Rosalind Volpe Blood Lead Comparison Program In mid-1980 the Environmental Health Committee requested that LIA compile biological monitoring data for the lead industry and provide participants with a statistical summary of the data, rhese summaries would enable individual plants or companies to compare their results with comparable companies in the same type of business as well as with the lead industry as a whole. There is an urgent need at this time to gather PbB data for potential use in the new OSHA rulemaking which will probably commence in early 1982. All member companies of LIA are requested to participate in this program, since the results will be more valuable and effective if a large number of companies is involved. We are now asking all member companies for biological monitoring results for the third quarter (July 1 - September 30) of 1981; normal sampling practices should be maintained. The requested data are the same that would be made available on request to OSHA or to an employee representative. Because of the time required to translate the non-tape data you submit to the computer, we would prefer that the companies enter their data on magnetic tape. If a magnetic tape is not feasible, a revised form for compiling biological monitoring results has been enclosed. Companies which would prefer not to submit data on tape or these forms are re quested to provide a summary of statistics which should be sumbitted with the following information: means, standard deviations, and percentiles by department. Please keep employee identification constant throughout the data collec tion period so that at a later date it will be possible to retrospectively follow individual trends. We are not interested in individual names and, in fact, would prefer to have a code system. In June of this year, data for the second quarter of 1981 were requested and the results should be summarized by the end of November. In order to encourage partici pation, distribution of these summaries will be made only to those companies submitting data.
