Myers S u b je ct: Summary o f Meeting with Montello The follow ing is a summary of our rec e n t meeting with M ontello, our "world-wide" d is tr ib u to r of "C a lid ria " asbestos products fo r d r il li n g flu id a p p lic a tio n s. P lease advise i f you have any c o rre c tio n s, comments o r a d d itio n s . Date o f Meeting: 9/30/80 L ocation: Rodeway Inn, S t. Louis, M0 A tten d ees: Montello - K. N. Campbell, H. W yatt, A. Johnson UCC - J . L. Myers, J . E. Walsh, B. L, I n g a lls , H. B. Rhodes Discussion Items: 1. Massena Order - This 465-ton order fo r CSV was apparently destined fo r 5 d iff e re n t customers in various c o u n trie s , presumably South America. We received-and produced the order in May fo r shipments to be completed by June 30. The f i r s t shipment o f 116.25 tons was not made u n til 9/18/80 and the balance is s t i l l in King City (we invoiced Montello fo r the e n tire amount $74,400, on 6/30/80). Montello has been try in g to force Massena to take the m aterial by "threatening" i n t e r e s t , sto ra g e , repackaging and o th e r types o f extra charges; but Massena's customers have presumably been unable to c o rre c t im port licen se problems. I received a c a ll from B ill Kennedy of Massena confirming th e ir export problems and begging patience. I re fe rre d him to our In tern atio n al D istrib u tio n people fo r help but he d id not follow up on t h i s , M ontello, w ith my concurrence, decided on 10/6 to cancel th e order and b i ll Massena only fo r actual out-of-pocket c o sts. Since we had none we w ill receive nothing, except having M ontello's money sin c e July fo r m aterial not shipped. Massena has assured Montello th a t orders will ev entually be cleared fo r shipm ent, so we should see the business t h i s y ear. We have excess inventory now but i t w ill be used by Montello for fillin g regular orders. -2- October 8, 1980 2. M ontello's major concern is p o ten tial l i a b i l i t y problems for themselves and t h e ir custom ers. I w ill check with S ibley on whether or not we can do something to assuage t h e i r fe a rs . 3. Jack Walsh reviewed M ontello's monthly fo re c a stin g v s. actual purchases a summary is attached showing a deviation f o r th e l a s t four months of only 3% fo r CSV and 13% fo r SHURLIFT. 4 . Production o f s ila n e -tre a te d asbestos by a compounder fo r Dresser is a t a v irtu a l s ta n d s till because o f poor performance o f fin a l product. They have trie d JH 's Flosal and g e t b e tte r performance but poorer s t a b i l i t y . They a re evaluating various forms and grades o f our products and H ontello is- working c lo se ly with them to avoid lo sin g th is m arket. Dresser claims t h a t our product v aries by 50-1002 in some physical p ro p erties but we, or M ontello, have not been able to d u p lic a te t h e i r r e s u l ts . We have offered to co n su lt w ith or v i s i t t h e ir p la n t to render tec h n ica l a ssis ta n c e .- So f a r they have not accepted our o f f e r , probably fe a r fu l th a t we w i l l '" ste a l" some p ro p rie ta ry inform ation. D resser rep o rted ly found 4-5% c a lc ite in one l o t o f CSV. B la ir w ill forward our a n a ly sis o f th e suspect l o t which showed nothing unusual. 5. M ontello is convinced th a t UNIVIS i s the only product to prevent continued lo s s o f market sh are to J-M 's water-w etted "p e lle tiz e d " F losal. The o i l w etted version o f UNIVIS now seems im possible to produce a t a cost which would permit an acceptable price in the market p lace. Water-wetted is a ls o not fe a s ib le unless we can produce i t as a p a rtia lly - d r ie d p e lle t n o t by us or them re-w etting the dried p e ll e ts . They feel th a t the cu rren t UNIVIS (Super Standard Grade m in i-p e lle ts) can be successful only i f we can preclude th e presence of excessive fin e s (p rim a rily caused by our p e l l e t cooler) and package i t in sewn-top bags to prevent f ib e r from col . le c tin g between th e paper bag and p la s tic s h rin k -film . I completely agree w ith them, but we a re apparently not prepared to o f fe r t h is ; although they a re w illin g to finance th e equipment, share the c o s t, give us guaranteed requirem ents - o r whatever. I t was l e f t th a t they would try to find some one to do the packaging i f we can provide bulk m in i-p e lle ts a t a p ric e low enough fo r them to do the packaging and come out w ith a sa la b le p ric e to th e f ie l d . I o ffered to sh are some of the fin a n c ia l cost fo r promoting and introducing UNIVIS to th e m arkets. I f they can fin d a packager they p lan to make a s ig n if ic a n t promotional e f f o r t . 6. They have been asked to prepare an a r t i c l e fo r p u b lic a tio n by the Independent A ssociation o f D rillin g Contractors (IADC). An a r t i c l e on JM's Flosal has re c e n tly been published and IADC w ill "endorse" Flosal unless H ontello can convince them t h a t UNIVIS i s j u s t as " sa fe " to u se . We w ill review a ll inform ation p rio r to p u b lic a tio n . A copy o f th e Flosal a r t i c l e is attach ed . 7. B la ir presented a summary (copy attached) o f re c e n t UNIVIS dust counts compared with re g u la r CSV and o il-w etted m a te ria l. As expected, UNIVIS r e s u l ts a re b a s ic a lly in between the o th er two. Regular monitoring on CSV usage has not been done since 1977 because "UNIVIS" has been "coming" s in c e then. I t was decided th a t more frequent m onitoring is in order so that-custom ers can be given more up -to -d ate in fo rm atio n . Hontello was reminded th a t none o f our dust count rep o rts can be sen t to customers w ithout our prio r w ritten approval. i Type. S fnX tthH uappeJ g P a lletized lo o b t Loaded TOTAL Fci t .
