Y, The Minutes of the various Committee meetings have been circulated and will form a part of this report* ASHRAE MEETING - ST, LOUIS, MO,, JANUARY 29 & 30, 1962 Sixteen out of eighteen Thermal Insulation Sc Vapor Barriers Committee members were present, representing manufacturers, consumers and research members* 2 Subjects included on the Agenda were: 1* Scope - Presented by Messrs, J. M. Barnhart and R, A, LaCosse of the Insulation Board Institute. 2. Revisions of Chapters t, 22 & 23 of the ASHRAE GUIDE - Messrs, J. M. Barnhart, C. E. Ernst & K. M. Ritchie have the responsibility of the Section entitled ''Pipe Insulation'1.2 3 4 5 6 7 8 3. Thermal Conductivity Calibration - A round robin involving ASHRAE, ACIL Sc.NBS is now being conducted. Eight independent laboratories are participating. 4. Plastic Thermal Insulation - Data relating to thermal conductivity of expanded polyurethane filled with heavy molecular weight gases is being collected for inclusion in the ASHRAE GUIDE, PREFABRICATED DUCT SYSTEMS COMMITTEE MEETING NEW YORK, N, Y. FEBRUARY 15, 1962 The Committee met for the purpose of discussing the differences in the Industry Recommended Standard and Underwriters Laboratory Subject Number 181 - Air Ducts, Letters have been written to NFPA, U. L, and FHA suggesting changes in UO - Subject Mo. 181. Further, NBFU was written to requesting that mineral fiber duct systems be declared in conformity with NBFU, No. 90A (par, 111(a)), removal of the 5000 cm and two-story restriction now present in NBFU, No, 90A (par. 111(b)), and that NBFU, No. 903 (par. 121 (d)) be altered to allow the systems to be used beyond the first three feet from the radiant heat source of the heating unit* NBFU has reported that a Special Committee is studying the request and that an answer will be forthcoming in the near future, MINA T St R COMMITTEE MEETING - CHICAGO, ILL., MARCH 9, 1962 Subjects discussed at this meeting included the following: 1* Basis of Calculating Heat Transfer 2, Definitions 3, Common Basis of Presenting Economic Thickness 4, Economic Thickness Study (Low Temperature) 5, O. D, *s of Thermal Insulation for Tubes 6, Smoke Sc Fire Resistance of Thermal Insulation Sc Finishes 7, Stress Corrosion of Stainless Steels 8, BRAB;s Planning of Publishing Technical Data Relating to Thermal Insulating Materials. 3 ASTM MEETING - CHICAGO, ILL., MARCH II THRU 14, 1962 NIMA was given the job of revising some 13 specifications covering magnesia, calcium silicate, amosite asbestos, mineral fiber and diatomaceous earth thermal insulating products. Other ASTM specifications relating to Methods of Tests, O. D, *s of Preformed Thermal Insulations for Pipes and Tubes, Trueness and Squareness of Pipe h Block Insulation are being reviewed by the NIMA T & R Committee, EXPORT PACKAGING COMMITTEE - NEW YORK, N, Y., March 21, 1962 This Committee met for the purpose of formulating a minimum standard on this subject. Preliminary work is started. NEW YORK STATE INSULATION CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION MEETING SYRACUSE, N. Y,, APRIL 6, 1962 The writer attended this meeting for the purpose of expressing NIMA's views concerning the section of the New York State Code pertaining to thermal insulation. STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING, WASHINGTON, D. C., APRIL 18, 1962 The data pertaining to installed costs of insulation obtained by West Virginia University was discussed. It was decided that the data would be reviewed by the Committee and if no comments were received by May 1, 1962, the study could proceed. GOVERNMENT T St R COMMITTEE MEETING, Y7ASHINGTON, D. C, April 19, 1962 At this meeting 11 different government agencies were present. Standard methods of tests was discussed. NIMA has been largely responsible to get the various government agencies to use ASTM Methods of Tests, In the past there was a tendency to use methods of tests developed by each agency.. One of the subjects'discussed and asked for by the agencies present pertained to NIMA Standards. I would like to suggest that NIMA develop a standard to be promulgated by the U. S. Department of Commerce on high temperature insulation, i, e.. Commercial Standard. THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY CALIBRATION MEETING, NEW YORK, N. Y, APRIL 26, 1962 The results of the latest series of round borin tests were discussed. The test indicated that the-conductivity values obtained on the single sample fell within a range of ^ percent of the average of the tests. Another round robin test will be run on two samples of a rather dense material in the low 4 temperature rar.ge and medium temperature range, TEST PROJECT AT WILLARD STATE HOSPITAL This project was completed in March, 1962.
