Dr. Jan Lieben Pennsylvania State Occupational Health Director 1
Lieben presented a survey of past work plus current surveys in a small tova in
operation where mesotheliom mesotheliom Pennsylvania probably Manhattan
considerable
hed been observed Many of the chees were consented to asbestos only by inference
because of the proximity within several miles of the plant - a good case of
incrimination by sasociation
:
Lieben recommended that a national register of meso.belim meso.belim ever be rs up to
prevent prevent duplicate recording of the same canes in the literature and subsequent subsequent
ecmpounding ecmpounding of cases during literature surveys
Dr. 1. J. Belikoff Mount Sinai
Kourital
Belikoff reported much the work of his group and introduced them of
Hammond epidemiology Smith animale Churg pathology Langer mineralogy Berkley technical surveys Schall industrial hygiene He described work which has already been reported plus continuous studies on the asbeston workers Three bospitals in New York do nov regularly take samples of lung tissue from all autopay cases
examining for estestos bodies and fiber inclusione ce asked specimens will be correlated with pathologie information
The date
They are now starting as expanded progrua with 10,000 insulation workers It vill also include building trade workers indirect exposure neighborhood residents of a plant in 1942 geographic plus latent period for comparison of general populations They are beginning a progren to survey air pollution by looking for nineral fibers on air filter membranes They will study trace elements such as
nickal iron chrome ecbelt and magnesium in vorhere
langer has not yet defined make up of may subestos bodies by the aleroprobe studies are encouraging Finally smoking habits will be studied sad lthough reliko
reiterated the strong effect of smoking even in the asbestos workers group
Occupational Esolth Bureau was represented by
The Bureau 1 checking chrysotile uines and mille end has found dunt concentrations generally high They were eritical of most management although Bone vere specifically
Tuberakku indicated that the California Burneu has under way a study exposure 600 asbestos workers They will also check a large group that had a limited time exposure during
large -time building operation Tabershaw stated that their investigation shoved
large quantities of asbestos fibers being used in butaation of both power plant and in the ship building field He and Lieben vere extremly vritical of the
AI nloppy installation procedures especially where trowellable cement emtaining
sabestor was used He emphasised the large and intermittent intermittent But concentrations
encountered during installation

Dr. B. Cuyler Hammond
Rammond revieved the statistics und emphasized the importance of adequate sampling There appears to be a probable relationship between OI cancer and asbestos exposure No especially requested that various investigators pool their date so that it might be possible to obtain statistically significant data on a large basis as contructed to statistically significant date in each of a myriad of small investigations
Smith described the progres now being started by the QAMA grup and introduced Dr. Corbett McDonald of Mc0111 University who is supervising the vork Smith briefly described Manvillu's positim and our interest in srriving at factually correct inforzation Be emphasized the use of anosite primrily in insulation and therefore by asbestos workers He pointed mut that Johns Manville did dave large population of workers who are continuously monitored and that employment and health records were available to the Public Health Bervice as a source for
epidemiology study Dr. Baith noted the availability of standard samples of asbestos athersis from the Johannesburg Pneumoromiosis Research Unit
Pe.
H,, . Wolfeta Dalted States H^ber
Wolfsie noted that 500 people in their Atlanta Georgia textile plant are being studied clinically
Dr. C. C. Blackwell
Jr. Americas
-
Blackwell spoke briefly on their cooperation with the Publie Realth Servies in studying degradation products from brake shoe material Practically no asbestos vas observed in the degradation products except under extremely h^'veree panietype stops This subject will be reported in a separate latter

Dr. Corbett McDonald Madill University
McDonald revieved briefly the program at McGill to study rays of Canadian asbestos workers including both Manville personnel and Thetford ares personnel The program vill include histories of past employees and study the mining and milling groups as distinct populations Be emphasized the need for the pathological examination group to come up with a new and acceptable classification system for rays McGill's study vill start approximately March 1967 and they will adopt their own classification system if one has not been finally accepted by that time During discussion it was noted that the Thetford mines contain from 2 to 5 per cent Free silica while practically none has been noted at the Asbestos Quebes deposit
Dr. Pedford Kettering
Radford questioned whether rados content was being measured since this is known to be an extremely potent factor in bronchial cancer No radon has yet been observed in chrysotile deposits although some has been found th the crocidolite and amosite deposita probably due to the proximity of uranium to the latter
Dr. Churg Mount Sinai Hospital Hospital
a
Churg emphasized the difficulty of recognizing mesothelioms and that classification
vas not always unanimous He suggested that a panel be constituted to entse all
doubtful rays to scure scaformity of diagnosis
Dr. Paul Gross
Groes is so smpleting a year study with three specion of animals exposed to inhalinait nhi alao tin on chambers He has attempted to get greater retention of dust by Lye treatment of the trachon but this was set successful He did obtain 14 per cent of primary tumors in rat~ bet nonin bansters or nice The suly other occurrences reported in rete by euch tests ben benn by Neguer in suly suly of tests The reason for this is unexplained possibly the type of in My heve been diffurae ndnbte responsible Cralley suggested that type milling

Dr. Sidney Speil Manville
Johns Manville's Spail revieved
projected program in studying surface characteristics
of asbestos In addition the general program to study the decomposition products
obtained during the installation and service life of a variety of products containing asbestos was described The fact that chrysotile is not indestructible was noted
