Based on Mr. Benjamin' s report, Mr. Houser's findings and the T ech nical Committee's general evalu atio n of the merits of our research a c t i v i t i e s w ith in the Bureau of Standards, Mr. Shull requested that the 8oard consider approval of the continua tio n of the Research program fo r at le a s t two more y e a rs . In a d d itio n to the above request, the Technical Committee a ls o stands in support of an A ssociation s t a f f man being headquartered in Washington, as recommended by the B u ild in g Code Committee. Mr. S h u ll then reported on the asbestos dust te s t program re la tin g to j o i n t compounds. Mr. Shull read a w ritte n report from Mr. J . Volk, Chairman of the special committee to conduct this pro gram (attached) and expanded on the request for an a d d itio n a l $200G to move in to Phase II of the program. Mr. Shull f e l t that this work was extremely important and that a complete and comprehensive report to the membership could be made by the end of January 197^ with the approval of the ad d itio n al expenditure requested above. He fu rth er cautioned, th at follow ing the completed a n a ly s is of Phase 1 and Phase I I of th is program, i t might be found that ad d itio n al te s tin g would be required, and ad d itio n al funds requested. A th ir d area of major concern is the in e v ita b le tra n s itio n from English measure to the m etric system. Mr. Shu ll pointed out that this is an extremely complex problem and that the Technical Committee has e stab lish ed a basic task group to explore the ra m ifi cations which might be found in converting to m etric numbers. This problem is so large that other a sso cia tio n committees w i ll have to be involved in any fin a l determinations re la tin g to converting to the m etric system. He explained that converting from 5/3" th ick gypsum board would leave a measurement of 15.375 mm, an extremely d i f f i c u l t number to work w ith . When the Technical Committee task force on m e tric conversion completes it s work, Mr. Shu ll w ill rec ommend that an o ver-all task group made up of members from the Technical Committee, B u ild in g Code Committee, Promotional Committee and Manufacturing and Mining Committee, be estab lish ed to work out the fin a l recommendations. Mr. Shull then described the recent f i r e te s t program. Two of the o r ig in a l te sts sla te d to be conducted under the o rig in a l program were donated to the A ssociation by Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation, thus r e lie v in g the A sso ciatio n of the expense of these te s ts . A successful sound te s t was run on the " l o t lin e " assembly which is constructed of two separate w a lls spaced 1" apart with 1/2" type X gypsum w all board on each side of both w a lls and an ad d itional face layer on the expected f i r e side. The f i r e te s t on th is con s tru ctio n re s u lte d in a two hour ra tin g and the sound te s t resulted in a 57 STC w ithout mineral fib e r and a 59 STC w ith mineral fib e r in the stud c a v it y . . * . , j U i.
