Infrared Identification Of N-Butanol 1.0 Objective: 1.1 Tto provide a basic procedure for the identification-of n-butanol using the infrared spectrophotometer (ir). 2.0 Responsibilities: 2.1 It is the responsibility of the operations supervisors to ensure that adequate equipment, resources, and training are available to conduct this test properly. 3.0 Procedure: 3.1 Return to the plant lab and perform the following test: 3.1.1 Obtain the appropriate salt tablets and holder for n-butanol ir test. 3.1.2 Place one drop of n-butanol between two salt tablets. Place the sample and tablets in the holder. 3.1.3 Remove plastic cover, place sample cell in cell cradle and turn on ir unit. On/off switch is located on lower right end of unit. 3.1.4 All black buttons on the ir unit panel should be down and all white buttons up. 3.1.5 Wait until digital readout is on 400 wave numbers. 3.1.6 Move chart, if needed, to 4000 wave numbers by pressing "chart" and "forward", or "chart" and "rev", whichever is appropriate. 3.1.7 Set the baseline at about 75% of chart and press "scan". The digital readout should start to countdown and the chart should move forward. 3.1.8 The ir will automatically stop at 600 wave numbers. When this happens the sample is complete.
