THE Mine Ventilation Society OF SOUTH AFRICA CONSOLIDATED INDEX OF THE BULLETIN AND JOURNAL VOLUMES 1 to 10 1948 - 1957 INTRODUCTION The monthly Bulletin (recently renamed the Journal) issued by the Mine Ventilation Society over the past ten years has contained a great deal of useful information covering many aspects of mine ventilation and allied subjects. To provide an easy source of reference to this information the Council of the Society recently agreed to publish this Consolidated Index. The principal portion consists of a subject Index, in which all published papers have been classified under a number of suitable headings, and an Author Index. This is followed by an Abstract Index, in which are listed the pages on which abstracts relating to each subject have been published -- to conserve space the titles of the abstracts are not given. Finally there is an index to "Examination Questions and Answers" and an Index to Book Reviews. It was decided not to include in the Consolidated Index items such as minutes of meetings and purely administrative matters. After each section in the Subject Index a small space has been left so that those who wish to do so can keep this Index up to date by adding references to further papers on the subject as they are published in the Journal. Readers are requested to notify the Secretaries of any errors or omissions. This Consolidated Index was suggested by Mr. V. O. Steed, who undertook much of the preliminary work in preparing it. To assist the Editor and to expedite publication, authors are requested to comply with the following-- 1. Articles must be on some subject of interest to ventilation officials. Articles may be of any reasonable length--there is as great a need for short notes, describing some interesting point, as there is for full papers. Articles should be written in a clear, simple style and be kept brief and to the point. 2. Before submitting articles, authors must ensure that, where necessary, permission to publish is obtained, 3. Articles must be typewritten in double spacing, on one side only of foolscap or quarto paper, with wide margins. 4. At least two copies (complete with drawings) of each paper--preferably more if available--must be submitted. 5. All pages must be numbered. 6. The orthodox sequence of a paper is as follows-- (a) Title--which must describe clearly and concisely the contents of the paper. (b) Author's name--with designation or occupation. (c) A summary of the paper--which should set out briefly and clearly the scope of the paper, and a summary of the principal results. (d) Introduction--this might cover the object of the paper, or the problem investigated, and/or a review of previous work on the subject, etc. (e) Development--description of apparatus, instruments and/or methods used. (f) Results obtained and deductions therefrom. (g) Conclusion and/or inferences drawn, (h) Acknowledgements (if any). (i) References (if any). 7. Diagrams, figures, graphs, plans, etc., may be included only when essential to a clearer understanding of the paper. ' They must be-- (a) Well drawn, preferably by a draughtsman, in black Indian Ink on high quality white paper or card or on tracing cloth, with at least a two-inch margin all around. "Blue-prints," or similar processes, are not suitable for reproduction. The second, and additional, copies as called for in paragraph 4 above, may be prints, by any process, of the original drawing. (b) Preferably about 8" x 6" in size, but some latitude is permitted. Diagrams will normally be reduced in size in reproduction; allowance must be made for the fact that fine detail may thereby be lost, and any internal lettering must be of adequate size and clarity. (c) Provided separately from the text, but the text must show clearly where they are to be inserted. The figure number (in Arabic numerals, e.g. Fig. 2) and the caption to the figure (if any) must be written in pencil only, since these will be set in type for printing. 8. Photographs can be reproduced in the Journal, but as this is an expensive process, they should only be included if it is important to do so. Prints should be on glossy paper, not less than quarter plate size (4" x 3^") -- preferably larger. 9. Tables of results must be headed in Roman numerals, e.g. Table II. Tables and graphs of the same results are not normally permitted. 10. The Charts or tables used for determining psychrometric data, etc., must be specified. 11. The paper must be submitted in its final form. Any major alterations made subsequent to the printing of the galley proof will be charged to the author. 12. Galley proofs will be sent to the author for checking and correction. They must be returned to the Editor as rapidly as possible. The author is responsible for seeing that all errors are corrected. 13. Symbols and abbreviations must be of the form approved by the Society. 14. All articles and correspondence in connection therewith must be addressed to the Hon. The Society follows the practice laid down in "Information for authors, editors and printer's" issued by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa. It should be noted that the abbreviation is the same for singular or plural; also that the abbreviation of a single word does not have a full stop after it (e.g. lb) but that an abbreviation of two or more words does (e.g. B.Th.U.). Although strictly speaking it is not good practice to use abbreviations in the text of an article, this practice is permissible in the case of such common abbreviations as B.Th.U., c.f.m., f.p.m., p.p.c.c., r.p.m, etc. In case of doubt however the full word should normally be used in the text.
