Nuclear Service Division 236-5611 :a;e November 28, 1979 ' Restrictions for .^^Asbestos Jflses f- / Sis --Research s development center r Mr. John F, Gormley, Director '\ product Safety & Integrity \ vy .s/vr RECEIVED NOV 30 1979 MOOUCT SAFETY A INTEGRITY O0 The following information is provided in response to your November 9, 1979 request for conments on the restriction of the use of asbestos by government agencies. The restriction of asbestos use on consumer products would have negli gible effect on Nuclear Service Division sales or performance of service. However, if EPA v/ould choose the course of limiting the amount of asbestos available to the marketplace, this would be detrimental to the power generation business and to the Nuclear Service Oivision since essential power plant service and maintenance parts (e.g. flexitallic gaskets, valve packing) cotrmonly utilize asbestos. Establishing and qualifying alternate materials would be time consuming and costly. r--n General Manager Nuclear Service Division /cp OP - DisorfiOate: 03112613
