This Rockdale Operations Employees Asbestos Handbook is designed to meet or exceed the requirements of OSHA, MSHA, EPA, and the Alcoa Corporate Engineering Standards. This handbook is a part of the continuing effort of Alcoa-Rockdale Operations to reach its goal(^^a leader in safety and quality. ARD 004442 GENERAL POLICY Asbestos has been widely used in a variety of products, many of which are or have been used at Rockdale Operations. Asbestos creates a significant health hazard potential to employees who inhale airborn fibers. Due to the potential, it is the responsibility of every employee at Rockdlae Operations to know and under stand the implications of asbestos in the work place. It is the resposibility of every employee to avoid personal exposure or exposure of others to asbestos. The inspection, collection, sampling, or abatement of asbestos must be performed by trained, qualified, and authorized personnel only. ARD 004443 HEALTH EFFECTS OF ASBESTOS Asbestos ha&Jsz&h known to cause cancer in humans. It is offically listed as a carcinogen by OSHA. INHALATION - Excessive exposure to asbesto^dusjy causes chronic inflammations of lung tissue, as well as cancers, in both man- 1 and animals. fjdM Prolonged exposure to asbestos (tfiisff has been found to cause pulmonaryTibrosis (asbestoses), which may be disabling and even fatal. INGESTION - Amounts ingested incidental due to industrial exposure diw not lHroly cause injury. SKIN - Mechaical injury only. Skin adsorption is unlikely. MUTAGENICITY - Some forms of asbestos reported to induce chromosomal changes in tissue culture. ARD 004446 RESPONSIBILITIES EMPLOYEE DO'S * Get positive identification of any materials in question. If there is a^josTBIIity that asbestos may be present, notify your supervisor. * Be aware of sub-4ayesed materials. Some vessels, equipment, etc. may contain more than one type of insul ation. Asbestos material may be covered by refractory, siding, or insulation. * Know where asbestos is present in your work area. Avoid disturbing these areas.* * Inform others in the general area where asbestos work is in progress.
