By this letter I would like to reiterate my comments made at the meeting concern ing field cutting of A/C pipe. Field cutting can be accomplished today within the OSHA guidelines with all available methods, with the exception of the dry abrasive disc saw. Even this method is acceptable to OSHA when using the wet attachment. However, with the introduction of the A/C Pipe Closure Unit last year, field cutting has become a thing of the past. The new closure unit puts to rest OSHA's concern of exposure due to field cutting and machining of A/C pipe. When you eliminate the cutting and machining, you eliminate the possibility of exposure. A/C Pipe Closure Units are readily available from both CertainTeed Corporation and Capco Pipe Company, Inc. t Based on this information, I would appreciate if you would revise the last paragraph on page 3 of your "Pipe Material Report" dated November, 1986, in order to clarify the field cutting procedure. It seems to me that "extreme safety precautions" is too strong a term for a product that can be used as safely as A/C pipe. We in the A/C industry anticipate no interruption in the manufac turing and selling of A/C pipe from any governing agency and sincerely appreciate the City of Glendale specifying and using our product.
