TEX 2X2B (ll'Bl) MEMORANDUM TO W. F. Edmonds date February 27, 1985 J>M G. L. Phillips SUBJECT Asbestos Disposal COPIES TO H. D. Baughman, J. L. Carver, J. F. Crouch, W. Dierksen, 0. E. Dworsky, H. F. Goss, B. R. Jones, D. H. Lucy, D. G. Pringle., R. N. Quinn, J. W. Watts, R. G. White, and C- V. Willis '~ __________________ A meeting was held February 25, 1985 to discuss proper disposal of asbestos insulation. The following procedure was agreed upon: 1. Asbestos materials will be placed in specially marked yellow bags at Building 25 and throughout TEX. 2. Calcium silicate insulation will be placed in clear bags throughout TEX, although it is put in yellow bags with asbestos at Building 25. 3. Complete segregation of asbestos (in yellow bags) and silicate (in clear bags) is not critical. 4. As much as feasible, the insulation should be removed from metal so no metal is put in the bags. 5. The bags, except for Building 25, will be taken to collection box adjacent to the landfill. The bags in this staging facility must not be broken. 6. On some regular basis, perhaps once per week, the collected bags will be placed in the landfill. On the same day the collected bagged in sulation from Building 25 will be taken to the landfill. The bags will be covered within 24 hours with six inches of non-asbestos material, including imported dirt if necessary. 7. The Building 25 work will last another three or four weeks. After this, there probably will be no need for imported dirt. 8. Generally all non-asbestos insulation will be bagged with the calcium silicate insulation. However, exceptions will be made for large volumes of non-asbestos insulation, which will not be bagged. There will be a meeting Friday with selected TEX personnel to emphasize these procedures and the need for special handling of asbestos insulation. It is recommended, in the future, that bagged insulation be disposed of in a separate, dedicated landfill. 149U w. F.
