I HE Nordberg 12-cylinder, twocycle diesel engine pictured here is one of two in Anglo-Lautaro Nitrate Corporation's new Coya Sur diesel generating plant near Tocopilla, Chile. This power plant forms part of a three-plant network, operated by the company, whose combined generating facilities total 46,000 kw. These engines, which are the most powerful single-acting, two-cycle diesel engines in the Western Hemi sphere, are both rated at 8950 bhp and 6400 kw at 80 percent power factor. Below each engine, in the basement, is an Elliott 44,200-cfm motor-driven compressor operating as a scavenging blower and requir ing 545 kw when running at full load. The operations of the AngloLautaro Nitrate Corporation cover a large area in the nitrate fields inland from Tocopilla, including a new by products plant at Coya Sur and two large nitrate-producing plants. In addition to these, the company owns and operates a 45-mile, partially electrified railway between the plants and the port works at Tocopilla.
