MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT - JULY 1971 RESEARCh & DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION SECRET - COUPANY CONFIDENTIAL I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook) A. FELTS AND PAPERS Gasketing Three calipers of acrylonitrile binder, asbestos gasketing sheet, GN-706, and two of the three calipers of SBR binder product, GS-900, have been successfully run at Erie. The third, .060" caliper SBR gasketing desired will be obtained temporarily by laminating two thinner sheets together. Stock drainage problems were encountered when attempting to run the thickest sheet. It is believed that this can be overcome with minor formulation changes. There are 11/2 tons of each binder type, including Neoprene, in three calipers now available in inventory. B. AUTOMOTIVE The Ford Thunderbird, wheelhouse cover slush casting, production molds were delivered to Joliet but their normal use was delayed because of a crack in one of the aluminum castings and a water leak;. Twenty-four sets (right and left housings), however, were made on a laboratory basis for submission to Ford to obtain a final product release. The production equipment is expected to be ready by the second week in August. A number of stain tests were performed on various asphalt sound deadening membrane combinations laminated to molded carpet. Evalu ations made according to Fisher Body procedure indicated that the bituminous mastic did not have any staining tendency, which was the concern of some automotive engineers. Arrangements to take samples and discuss this data with Fisher Body representatives have been made. C. THERMAL INSULATION Test installations of non-asbestos Calsilite were completed at the GAP Linden plant on a 500F line and a 1,000F power plant line in Tampa, Florida. After two weeks service on the 1,000F line, a portion of the installation was examined and it was found to be functioning satisfactorily. The inside layer broke upon removal but the contractor considered this was only slightly poorer than normal calcium silicate insulations and of no particular significance. Additional installations are being completed at Philadelphia Electric and GAF Binghamton and Johnson City. A metering system designed to introduce the stress corrosion cracking inhibitor at individual molding presses rather than into the entire batch has been installed at the Calsilite plant and appears to function satisfactorily. Product made using this system is now being checked for inhibition performance. MICH08521
