Mulligan - Point Comfort RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING Minutes of the quarterly meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Committee held on September 24, 1964. Present: Messrs. 0. L. Royer, C. T. Cates, C. 0. Turner, H. E. Bonds and Dr. J. W. Griffin. Old Business: Mr. Royer reviewed minutes of previous meeting, specifically clothing damage grievance in Electrolyte Plant, the Lane emphysema case, calcium oxalate and dust problems in bauxite storage, transition of operation of Francitas Gas Plant, heat shields on kiln bearings and insufficient lockers in R-l46 washroom. There has been no change in the status of these items since the meeting of April l6. Mr. Royer reported briefly on the meeting of the Texas Chemical Council and asked if there were any problems in our operations in isolating air lines to prevent hooking up safety equipment to wrong line. No problems were recognized New Business: Mr. Turner questioned some shop practices in connection with use of nitric acid for cleaning aluminum engine filters. Mr. Mulligan will investigate. Mr. Turner also reported some Pilot Plant work will be done soon on oxalate process, involving handling of sodium oxalate. Personal hygiene will be stressed in this operation. Mr. Cates reported that it was pointed out in the Texas Chemical Council meeting that some unsatisfactory prescription type safety glasses were getting on the market. Will watch for then here. It was stressed that an effort was being made through physicals and other methods to locate those wearing contact lenses in operating areas to get conventional safety glasses on these people to avoid can3ge to eyes from foreign particles. Mr. Royer will arrange to have these inspections made. Dr. Griffin pointed out that an increasing number of employees were using diuretics in connection with weight reduction and high blood pressure programs. These drugs remove sodium and potassium from the system which should be replaced. Those working in hot areas should increase the use of salt tablets. Dr. Griffin will work with other physicians in the area through medical meetings and will prepare a handout that can be used in safety meetings. Safety and hygiene practices for the new caustic chlorine plant were i generally discussed. It was pointed out that there may be a mercury problem in I this operation. / Possible hazards in connection with sawing and machining Marinite were ,1 discussed. It was thought that hooding and ventilating system in Bldg. 19 shop was adequate at present level of operations. J It was decided that routine meetings of the committee would be held at 2;00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each quarter.
