Utidjian, M.D Reference Cliff Hellings recently sent you the notice from Bill Hall that our request for a temporary variance and interim order from the 50/40 MRP has been granted. Our medical surveillance program must be altered to conform with the 05HA interim order, therefore all employees with blood lead level-s between 50-60 ug/lOOg who work in jobs having airborne lead exposure at or above 30 ug/m^ shall be seen by one of the physicians at the Clearing Industrial Clinic every two months and shall have a complete physical examination every six months. It will be necessary for the attending and ex amining physician to evaluate the employee's health with special attention to the effects of lead and make a regular medical deter mination as to whether the employee has a medical condition which places the employee at increased risk or impairment to health from exposure to lead. If the employee is determined not to have a condition which would place the employee at increased risk from further exposure to lead, the written statement so stating from the physician must be submitted to the Office of Variance Deter mination that the employee may continue to work at the present job. If the employee is determined to have a condition which places the employee at increased risk of impairment to health from further exposure to lead the employee shall be removed from work having exposure to lead at or above 30 ug/m^. NJ 074 70 September 19, 1983 Robert E. 8oyd , M.D. Clearing Industrial Clinic 5548 West 65th Street Chicago, IL 60638 Dear Dr. Boyd: Please find the attached enclosure pertaining to our requirements under the temporary variance requirements as instructed by OSHA. Our employees will be sent to the Clearing Industrial Clinic for a consultation every two months and a complete physical examination every six months. At the time of the visit the consultant and/or physician must assess the physical conditions which could be associated with lead exposure. Briefly, these must include a review of the gastrointestinal tract, hematology, renal, cardiovascular, reproductive and neurological problems. The physician should examine the teeth, gums, gastrointestinal, renal, cardiovascular and neurological systems. At the two month evaluation the physician should obtain and review the - recent blood lead levels and the employee's ZPP levels. At the time of the full physical examination, in addition to the above, the employee's pulmonary status should be evaluated with spirometry and fulfill the other requirements of the OSHA lead standard for medical examinations, a copy of which is attached.
