Period Covereds April 1-30, 1946 DATE SUBMITTEDs 4-30-46 DATE ISSUED: 5-14-46 N41556.01 DUP050150537 ammmm Initial imanufaeture In the plant indicated tho yield given in K-2078 to be too high# Since little reliable information was available# three laboratory series were run for yield using different lots of copperas# Oare was taken to avoid lose and the figures ob tained should be reliable# fields on pulps are of course open to error resulting from- careless sampling; in the ease of P-4-P there Is the additional difficulty that the apparent dry content varies with the analytical procedure used for determining solids. pmm Hus results obtained are summarized below and in more detail In the accompanying table (TableII), K-8078 - Formula yield Labo0ratory yielIfd Approx. Pit. Performance Wt. dry pigment 3755# 2500 2500 3400 Procedure for flrtMMftStaR..ffftMfllP 3 hra/10O C(Brabender) 16 hrs/70C ft Hwwsetlcally, 7500# FeSOg.THgO gives 2155# FeoOs or 2880# Fe(0H). The above laboratory yields correspond respectively to Feg0g.o*59@ %0 and FegO^.1.43 HgO. For testing purposes (Intercomparison of samples)# the quick method (2 hrs/160C) is more convenient. Plant shipments are analyzed by the other procedure (18 hra/70C) which is more in line with the temperatures at which the pulp is actually used. mmmmm Copperas liquor Is analyzed for MF@S04#7%0 by titrating the Pe4"4" with permanganate (KCR-138)# If no Fe,++ fa present, this also gives the total iron and the yield will correspond with the weight of copperas taken. If Fe*4"4, Is present it will be precipitated during the process mid the yield would be correspondingly higher. In practice, only a small amount of F+++ is present and it can be neg lected without serious error. It was determined in Exp. 1214-1 and amounted to ca. 0.8-0.9 g PeSOd.THgO in a 2 mole batch (556 g FeS04,7HS0). Solids were determined as followst- I.2 hrs, - 100C. Brabender II. 16 hrs. - 70C. Oven (Plant method) III. Large sample (200 g) dried 10-20 hrs. in oven at 60C. (140F.) 17. Like 2 but run in Brabender. Additional heating showed that weight had become constant. DUP050150538 **3* Methods IT give substantially tb same results; they aret higher thaar shat' Is obtained by method % anil give corres pondingly Mgher yields* (This confirms preliminary results obtained sometime age* Ref* 1126-64) Apparently# the material obtained by drying at 6G*70C contains about 10% water which comes off if the temperature Is raised to 1600, As shorn in the table a few of the results were badly out' of line for no known reason; these were omitted in determining the average yields* As a further cheek on the yields by method I, the dry samples (am 200 g, pulp) were placed in the Brabender at 160c and from the "solids" obtained another set of yields were calculated* these are shown below# fAM I 1120-01A B 0 D 1126-92A BG B 1214-1A 8 C D Wt* Of Wt#0btained from Pulp _*es>........ 707 80S 7S7 006 @24 841 331 741 866 801 865 796 48 47 SO 47 48 44 44 44 42*5 45.5 43*0 46*0 % "Solids" 2 hr*-160C* 87*4 80*9 90*1 90*8 92.t 98.7 92*6 98*6 92.1 90.0 91*7 90*4 Yield (2 mole) 166*0 168*0 170.8 171.0 (183*1) 171*1 160.8 (151*0) 189*8 164*0 170*4 165*0 ,% U) (l) Ayerage (l) Omitted in determining average. 168*. ........
