Peterson Dear Dr. Peterson: In our Industrial operations we are faced with a number of exposures to lead oxides and c hromates. To protect our personnel, we conduct regular, periodical quantitative lead urinalyses for lead content. It has been brought to our attention that a number of companies are evaluating the lead absorption of their employees with a porphyrin test. What has your experience been in connection with the suitability of the porphyrin test for determining lead absorption Can the porphyrin test be relied upon to give a good indication of lead absorption? We realize that the presence of porphyrin can result from other systematic defects, and that a positive porphyrin test would require a quantitative urinalysis, and/or blood tests to accurately determine lead absorption.
