Holly, New Jersey 08060 Dear Assemblyman Colburn: The Assembly may soon be considering S. 109, Senator Russo's legislative proposal to ban the use of the Draize eye irritancy test in New Jersey. The Soap and Detergent Association, speaking for its 147 members who manufacture over 90 percent of the soaps and detergents produced in our country, is opposed to this legislation. Even the amendments, which were offered prior to Senate passage, do nothing to eliminate our concerns. We are joining with companies in many other industries to bring to you a very different message than the one you have been hearing. It's my belief that you'll be impressed with the caliber of scientists you'll meet over the next several weeks and that you'll be equally impressed by their sincerity, dedication and research efforts. I'm writing to inform you of our opposition and to invite you to call upon us for whatever information you need. At least two of our member companies currently manage research facilities and conduct safety testing in New Jersey and it is important for them to continue to do so to protect consumers. Our Technical Director, Keith Booman of North Plainfield, is leading industry's dialogue with federal agencies regarding the Draize test.
