Dean and R. E. Raines to asbestos fibers. DATE OF SURVEY October 23, 1979 DISCUSSION On October 23, 1979, separate breathing zone samples were col lected on N. J. Dean and R. E. Raines to determine their exposure to asbestos fibers. They were stripping suspected asbestos insulation from an 8-inch line near the steam motor valve of the exhaust fan on #1 boiler on the third level of Building 704. During the stripping, both irrsulators wore 3M disposable dust masks and leather gloves. Before and during the stripping, the insulation was wetted. Stripped asbestos was placed in plastic bags for disposal. CONCLUSIONS The results are given in the attached table. The afternoon value on R. E. Raines may be explained by the fact he was so close to the insulation during the stripping. The location of the second piece of line was in a position that was difficult to keep wetted. OSHA Ceiling for asbestos is 10 fibers > 5 pm/enr during any 15 minute period. Since the total exposure for each person was 67 minutes, the 8 hour time-weighted average is far below the OSHA limit of 2 fibers > 5|im/cni for an 8 hour working day. 1 UCC 024732 Mr. W. T.
