More PLANT PROBLEMS. /*pep* Ij/' pressure and temperature of system on valve tag. Number on tag should cor* respond (> that for valve on the draw* ings. 4. Temporary valve pita may be made of wood with a metal cover. Permanent valve pits or manholes are best made of concrete because they have a longer life and need lesa maintenance. H D Wavhe Brooklyn, N. Y. MY ADVICE to BL Is to start by making a almple line diagram of his external water system. Show on this diagram all Information concerning the system, in eluding recent changes workmen may remember accurately. Men who dig a ditch ond handle heavy plpca and valves ususUy hove an excellent idea of just where the work occurred. Use metal detectors to find where takeoffs leave the main line, and the route of unknown pipes. Secure o 1-in. earth auger driven by a % or %-in. electric drill. Drive auger into ground when detector shows metal whose pur pose is unknown. Lower a small light into hole to determine metal shape. Compressed-air line can be used to clean hole, if neccisory. Use a sharp ened steel rod to probe for shallow pipes. Cracks in ground or a dlfierence in texture often show where a ditch has lirn dug. Use o 4x4-in. piece of doorplate or a nonferrous plate to mark valve location. Fit it with two legs to prevent it turn ing. Mount flush with ground in sum mer, raise it above usual snow level in winter. Mark valve-identifying data on plate surface. D L Cochrane MUaco, Minn. START FROM WATER MUIR, tracing out lines with o mine detector. Make a drawing of pipes as you proceed. Lo cale each valve with respect to some permanent landmark. Hang pipe drawing in maintenance office so all new employes can become familiar with it. Wo have a drawing like this in my plant and it has always Keen a big help. Eowest Sidswitx Brooklyn, N. Y. INSTALL NEW VAIVSS in lines when they are located. This saves digging cost and allows positive identification of valves. Revise piping drawings and operating Instructions to include these new valves. Use metal, concrete or wooden pits to protect underground valves. Pour crushed atone into pit bottom to permit good drainage. Allow surrounding gran' lo grow over pit cover, if desired. A J Dbeucelmahs New York, N. Y. TRY TO ftORROW a pipe-locating device from your local water department <>r a nearby large company. Use h to ^ trace out piping system, making a tim-; pie line diagram os you proceed. Aw . sign numbers to valves and fit with post | indicators lo show if they are open or. closed. BL can use extension valve 'i boxes so lawn mowing will be easy. C E Botiian New York, N. Y, BIST PLAN is to hove all main shutofl valves in basement of building they servo. Then you have no worries about snow covering them In winter or cor- ' rnsion from rolnond moisture. A A Hunnrwinkel ^ IToodstoek, IU. OROUNfMEVEl MARKERS of aluminum ure good. BL should try a few and see. ;. Fit markers with an opening for the ' valve stem. Have markings Urge enough so they are easily read. Aluminum mark-; era ere good above ground, too. C G Howaoter Canton, IU. NEW SOLNUS OILS GIVE YOU MORE LUBRICATION PER DOLLAR Hew Multimillion-Dollar Plant Producing Better General Lubricants at Moderate Prices Question No. 2: How Can We Slop These Valve Leaks? HERE ARE THE FACTSi Valve* in lines to our two low-pressure feedwater heaters Iciik when the load Is low. These valves nre In vent, slrnm and drain line* for tho beaters. Plan! Is rated at 400,000 kw. Air appears lo leak through valvo packing at the gland. Tlmrc's soma leakage at stem, too. New peeking doesn't help much, Air thnl teaks - through the valves shows up In our condensers, hurts plant performance. Since most of these valves ure fully open or fully closed, we've been wondering If reversing them In the line would help. Flow would act oo top of globe-valve disk, Instead of bottom. Condensate on disk top would help seal valve while U Is closed. Or Is there o better icolT--D, April Power Here Are the Answers. They can be used for lubrication of plain bearings, antifriction bearings, link ages, slides, cams and. gears; in gear boxes, hydraulic systems, circulating systems, in dustrial diesel engines, compressors. ' They can be used for longer periods because they resist oxidation, prevent rusting and corrosion. They can be applied by every method used in the general lubrication of industrial machinery. They have low carbon content In compressors, for instance, any carbon that, does form is Boft and fluffy, is easily blown off, does not build up. ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, being higher than heater and condenser pressure, causes air leakage Into the system. Use valves with lantern rings in bonnet to stop leakage. Supply clean water (con densate or boiler feed) to rings. Sketch shows a pan arrangement for feeding water lo lantern ring. CD may fit rings to valves himself or have valve manufacturer do the job. If ooly a few small valves ore needed, it moy be cheaper to replace existing with new ones made especially for this service. Results are better. 11 B Wayne Brooklyn, N.
