"Long life" filters should be cleaned with compressed air, or shaken Most filters should be dried before they are cleaned Filters should not be dipped in any cleaning solvent to remove grease and similar mate rial, because the filtering characteristics may be changed
Rubber parts should never be dried by direct application of heat or sunlight
Employees should be instructed to wipe off oil, grease, and other harmful sub stances from headbands and other parts of the respirator as soon as they collect They should be warned not to use solvents to dean plastic or rubber parts.
Most face and mouth pieces for respira tory protective devices are made from rub ber or rubber-like compounds Usually hand brushing or agitation in a washing machine, using detergent and warm water is sufficient to dean them Formaldehyde,
modified phenolics, hypochlorite or quater nary ammonium compounds in the proper strength can be used to disinfect the parts All detergent should be nnsed from the de vice before disinfecting, except where com bination detergent and quaternary ammoni um compounds, which permit combining the dcaning and disinfecting operations, are used.
After deaning and disinfecting, the parts should be nnsed tn dean water and dned quickly. It may also be desirable to rinse parts treated with quaternary ammonium compounds since their disinfecting proper ties continue and except for rare cases, it wifi not produce a ilnn irritation
Hot water, steam, solvents, and ultravio let light should not be used to dean and disinfect rubber parts because they have a detenoratmg effect
It is generally not possible to disinfect headbands, at least not the elastic ones, but they may be washed with soap and water and replaced when the respirator is trans ferred to another user.
