Why HSC thinks we are doing as well as we are in plant safety: - Relationships better, safety logs taken care of, people willing to 1isten. - Company has responded to problems much better than in the past. - Better communications - action taken. - Programs, continuous safety awareness (summer brochures, etc., shutdown safety preventive rather than corrective). - Craftsmen work safely. - Just one of those things - predestination. General Permit - comments from HSC members: The leadmen feel they are being held responsible for operations responsi bilities. They liked small work permit. It was quicker and simpler. Maintenance men put them in their pocket and returned after completion, whether chief was around or not. We need to get leadmen all together to voice their opinion. The permit should be a safety meeting topic before implementing. Too similar to Fire Permit. Plant Safety and Housekeeping Inspections LAM013587 The Annual Safety and Housekeeping Inspection will be Sept. 19, 20 and 21 conducted by personnel from the Chocolate Bayou plant. Feedback to plant will be Sept. 24. Theme this year is "Safety Through Employee Involvement." The 3rd Quarter Safety and Housekeeping Inspection is week of August 6. The HSC recommended that maybe teams from area plants could inspect each other. The HSC also felt that surprise inspections are better. Hourly-Safety Committee Meeting July 31, 1984 Page 2. New Business Do our lawn mowers comply with OSHA requirement? Mark Riddle will look at our lawn mowers. Scaffold boards for shutdwn coming in split sometimes. Carpenters have culled several. Nails stick out of cleats. A meeting was held with supplier to identify our requirements - further action in this area is planned by LP&S. Painters are painting over I.D. numbers on equipment and gauges. Need to put plastic bags over them. No need to paint plastic instruments for example. Tommy Glover said painters are instructed to use a jelly-like substance to cover gauges, etc. He will bring up at next safety meeting. Fans in lactic warehouse needed - very hot. Sherman Jones said he would get large portable fan to use while unloading drums. Styrene tanks - two in North 68 have no lettering. These tanks have been identified. Stop signs - review the need for stop signs at pedestrian crosswalks. Our next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. in Personnel Conference Room #1 on August 28, 1984. SC 12394 Paul Bailey LaM0135Qq
