Shell Chemical is participating in a multi-stakeholder health study in Shanghai, China, which aims to better define the hazards and health risks from exposure to benzene.
The project participants include a wide range of stakeholders including the Fudan University Medical Center, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center; Applied Health Sciences, Chinese public health agencies, Shanghai hospitals as well as several peer energy and chemical companies.
This study, which is part of our commitment to product stewardship, will help clarify previous assumptions regarding benzene health risks and will also help address some recent questions about benzene hazards and exposure. Further, this information will provide the industry with information, which we can use to determine what, if any, improvements are needed in existing protocols.
The study will examine past and current exposures in Shanghai-area manufacturing facilities (none are Shell facilities and the benzene not a Shell product).
A state-of-the-art clinical and molecular laboratory was built on the Fudan Medical University campus to support the research project and the Shanghai medical community. Chinese technicians have been trained to operate the lab. This facility will remain at Fudan once the project is completed.
Shell Chemical contributed $3 million to project
In December 2003, the Consortium held its Launch ceremony in Shanghai. Approximately 250 people attended, including the President of Fudan University, the Principal Investigators, the US Consulate General, all 23 participating hospitals as well as the consortium members
Since the project's inception, 26 hospitals in Shanghai are now referring cases to the Fudan clinical laboratory, including the second most prominent hospital in Shanghai.
Approximately, 786 cases have been referred with 750 cases selected for clinical evaluation. To date, over 100 cases have been identified; patients are offered to the opportunity to become part of study.
In 2004, Shell is taking a leadership role in the consortium; chairing the Oversight and Budget committees. A key milestone for this year will be the consortium's annual meeting, which will take place in Monterrey, California in August

The Shanghai bz study is a epidemiology study that is being conducted by a consortium. The purpose of the study is to determine if there is any linkage between bz exposure and Non Hoskins Lymphoma (NHL). Shell is one of several sponsoring companies. Patsy Clegg can provide more details if you wish.
