SKC GUIDE TO NIOSHIOSHA AIR-SAMPLING STANDARDS
The tables on pages 4-10 list chemical hazards In air and the established NIOSH/OSHA procedures lor sampling and analysis. The following terms and abbreviations are used in the tables:
TERMS
TWA (ppm): Time-weighted average is the average contamination level in one million parts of air to which a worker may be exposed continuously for eight hours without damage to his health. Gov ernment regulations explicitly require that the TWA be monitored to make certain that it stays below this level during the entire eight-hour work period.
Ceiling (ppm): The ceiling level is the maximum (peak) concentra tion in one million parts of air to which a worker may be exposed for short periods. The ceiling level requirement is in addition to the TWA requirement. The TWA must not be exceeded; therefore, there must be a corresponding period below the TWA to compen sate for high exposure periods. Whore a dash appears in the ceil ing column in the tables, no ceiling level has been established by NIOSH/OSHA; therefore, the ceiling (peak) concentration is the same as the TWA.
Action Level: The action level is currently being considered by NIOSH/OSHA. It is the level at which a monitoring program must be established. An action level of approximately one-half the TWA is being considered for most chemical compounds.
Sample Volume: The sample volume is the volume of a sample that will result in accurate analysis. Normally, this volume can be taken tor concentrations up to twice the TWA without breakthrough. Other volumes and sampling rates can sometimes be used. Check the literature references in the table footnotes for limitations on other volumes and rates.
Sampling Rate and Sampling Time Alternative sampling rates and sampling times are listed in the tables because some workers prefer to take two four-hour samples; others prefer to take one eight-hour sample. In the tables, the TWA hours are listed as eight hours with the shorter period in parentheses. The sampling rate for the eight-hour period is listed in the Sampling Rate column, with the rate for the shorter period in parontheses.
