MASS A meeting of the Plaster & Fireproofing Committee was held In Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Wednesday and Thursday, December 1 and 2*--1971. The following members were present: A. W. Dambros T. F. Egan T. P. Felt R. B. Moran (for J. H. Greer} J. C. Ottlnger (1) MINUTES The minutes of the September 14-15, 1970, meeting that was held at the Fenway Hotel In Cambridge, Massachusetts, and distributed under the letter dated November 30, 1970, were accepted. (2) NON-ASBESTOS M0N0-K0TE - REVIEW AND STATUS The research and testing program was reviewed. Discussion followed relative to the testing of assemblies at Underwriters' Laboratories Recommendations were as follows: (a) MK-III - continue to use where possible.- (b) MK-IV - obtain additional necessary ratings. (Since meeting, MK-4 has been UL approved for 3-hour blend system with light weight and regular weight concrete and trench headers, per UL letter dated January 5, 1972.) (c) MK-V - continue with research effort. (Since meeting, two formulations have been sprayed to fire test assemblies at UL for testing on February 4, 1972.) (3) REVIEW OF ASTM E-119 REVISION The new E-119 criteria was briefly reviewed along with affected Mono-Kote ratings. In general, where existing floor designs were in jeopardy of having their ratings reduced, the ratings were 250026i6 -2- "OOllSb maintained simply by Increasing the Mono-Kote thickness on the beam. (Since meeting, T. Egan and T. Felt together visited UL and reviewed all revised UL ratings. Where necessary and where possible, the ratings were revised to incorporate the recotanendatlons of the committee.) (4) FIRE TESTING It was agreed that fire tests should be conducted on assemblies: (a) Utilizing large member trusses (b) Utilizing open-web steel joists (c) Consisting of a more competitive RC 5-1 l/2Hr. (RC 10-lHr.) system (d) Utilizing a spandrel beam protected on one face with rigid board (e) Utilizing 100Z flat plate cellular deck (f) Similar to RC 7-2Hr. to maintain the 2-hour rating in the not restrained condition. (Since meeting, ASTM Committee E-5 has proposed to eliminate the not restrained temperature requirement on "steel floor or roof units having spans equal to or less than those tested." Because we are now presently limited to 8 ft. spans, the acceptance of this by ASTM would result in our achieving the required 2-hour not restrained rating without experiencing any hardship or limitation to what we currently have approved.) (g) Consisting of a more competitive RC 7-2Hr. system; that is, at a reduced concrete thickness, with approval for use with joists. (h) Utilizing an unprotected floor system with Mono-Kote applied to the beam and directly below the trench headers. (Since meeting, Mono-Kote has been sprayed onto such an assembly at UL.) (i) Cooperating with the Prestressed Concrete Institute to provide the fireproofing to prestressed single and double tees. (j) Sponsored by various steel deck manufacturers and others when we are asked to provide the fireproofing. 25002617 -3- rooiis It was agreed that more information was needed before recommending fire tests on assemblies: (a) Utilizing a column section less than W 10 X 49 (10 WF 49). (b) Utilizing a wall assembly with Mono-Kote applied directly to the interior face of brick. (5) COMPETITIVE FIRERPOOFING SYSTEMS There was a general review of competitive products and systems. (6) ASBESTOS/ There was a general review of the asbestos situation and the ' growing list of municipalities that have banned the spraying of all asbestos containing fireproofing materials.* (7) FIELD INSPECTION PROCEDURES The field inspection procedures (thickness, density, bond, ease of damagablllty, etc) of the Mew York Fire Insurance Rating Organization and the testing procedures before ASTM Committee E-6 were reviewed. It was concluded that more field controls of spray-applied fireproofing by regulatory agencies should be expected. (8) ASTM COMMITTEES The memberships on the various ASTM committees were reviewed: (a) E-5 (fire tests): T. Felt and T. Egan (b) E-6 (building construction): T. Felt (c) C-9 (lightweight concrete): (Since meeting. Bob Frohllch has accepted responsibility for membership on this important committee.) (d) C-ll (gypsum): W. R. Grace & Co. Research Personnel (e) C-20 (acoustical): Valt Plckthall (f) D-16 (Insulation): Tru Bjorklund (9) MONO-KOTE MANUALS It was agreed to continue with the present applicator manual. It was suggested that a single architectural manual to include all 25002618 70011SS architectural products was needed. Further, a separate technical manual for salesmen's use was needed. (10) APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS There was agreement that data sheet "Job Set-Up" was sufficient. If local conditions require additional information, such infor mation should be prepared by that local office to fit their individual needs. (11) APPROVED MDN0-K0TE APPLICATOR PROGRAM Although there may be reasons on a local level to adopt a socalled approved Mono-Kote applicator program, it was agreed that this should not be attempted on a national basis. (12) ADVERTISING It was felt that magazine advertising should be more topical. (13) LITERATURE The 1972 Mono-Kote sweets catalog was reviewed with general agreement as to its suitability. The priority for future updating of literature is the "Comparison Chart" (after release of UL's 1972 "Building Materials List") and following that an updating of "Fire Resistance Ratings." (14) MEMBERSHIPS AND ASSOCIATIONS Membership has been retained bn the three national building code congresses (Southern, BOCA, and ICBO)*but there has been no < participation at their code changes meetings* It was pointed out that our heretofore close relationship with national govern mental organizations and associated industries was inactive. (15) MISCELLANEOUS R. B. Moran accepted the responsibility to prepare a "white paper" on the subject of fire losses in multistory buildings protected with sprayed fireproofing. (16) ADJOURNMENT The Committee adjourned at approximately noon of the second day. *50026I9
