LEAD ALKYLS The following is a list of areas where asbestos material may be in use in the TEL area. 1. Pipe insulation - steam, lead, etc. 2. Still insulation 3. Furnace dryer insulation 4. Furnace lead pot insulation 5. Asbestos shorts used around lead or alloy pump spools 6. Alloy pot, melt pot, sodium tank, or flaker insulation. 7. Listing tape or asbestos blankets used in sodium storage. Concerning worker exposure, with the possible exception of the shorts used around the pump spools in the Furnace and Alloy areas, the exposure is limited to stripping and re-installing the material. There is very little operator exposure during this period and the mechanics involved are provided proper protection. It is my understanding that Maintenance has made a survey of all Stores material containing asbestos and is setting up a substitute material in all cases. In fact, we used a non-asbestos type loose insulation around the spool of an alloy pump on May 22. The only area where I see any need for possible sampling would be around the alloy and lead pot pump spools where loose asbestos is being used. I am told, however, that the addition of asbestos fines to the diaphragm depositing tank in the caustic-chlorine plant has been monitored and was found satisfactory. I do not believe we have anything in this area that would cause an exposure of this magnitude. A. R. Choppin E-00415 2 I believe that we ahould push the use of the non-asbestos substitute for pump spool insulation to avoid the potential exposure and to eliminate the need for monitoring. We are in the process of cleaning the loose shorts from the top of the pots to reduce the possibility of excessively high particle counts in the air in these areas until the substitution can be made. J. F. McElderry SODIUM The only area where asbestos exposure is likely for our sodium operations personnel is in Caustic-Chlorine. That area has been moni tored by Henry Taylor and found to be free of dangerous concentrations. S. D. Devall In the PVC area we have no use of asbestos as such. Of course, we do utilize asbestos tape and other insulation materials that contain asbestos. These are handled primarily by Maintenance. H.
